On Day 13 of the partial government shutdown, an 11-year-old from North Potomac is on a mission. My mind was just going through like, how can I help, how can I contribute to my family, said Bella Berrellez. The fifth graders mother works for the FDA and is currently furloughed as a result of the government shutdown. She got her last paycheck on Friday, December 28. I woke up one morning and went downstairs to eat breakfast and I saw the television was on and I saw it said the government was shutting down, said Berrellez. I just want my mom to be able to go back to work. Thats when Berrellez came up with a plan to try to bring in some extra money to help her family through the shutdown. Bellas Sweet Scrubs is a business she started, selling homemade sugar scrubs for $7 each.

Bet the government employee who's job it is to shut down these children businesses is still working.
This whining is such bull**** I can barely read it.
Shows the type of people the government hires..
.
Wow.
They ought to make a movie about it starring Tom Hanks.
The sob-stories start.
Fire them so they can be free to seek alternative employment.
Her mom has felt NO IMPACT of the shutdown. It has been a freaking week since her last pay check, she wasn’t going to get one this week anyway...
Austin Texas. Your BS Headquarters.
Mama will get paid, she’s just enjoying (or should be enjoying) an extra paid vacation at taxpayers’ expense
Mama had no business worrying her little girl like this
but of course, the commie mass media would naturally feature a story like this
CBS Austin ?
Like a direct communique from the Politburo.
For every shutdown story, there are a hundred open border stories.
I have as much sympathy for the GS government employees as they have had for me.
None.
How long before the animals at the National Zoo are kidnapped and cooked?
Only a few days before the business police in Maryland will shut her down and fine her more than her mom makes. It costs money to print up all the required lisences and tax forms. That little girl needs to pay her fair share.
Heather, if you are going to write such tripe, you should at least make it sound plausable.
The shutdown started Dec 11. If the shutdown actually did impact the person in the article, she would NOT have received a paycheck on Dec 28, some 17 days after the shutdown started.
Additionally, her next paycheck would likely not be due until late in January. Thus, we cannot assume it will be impacted by the shutdown, as the shutdown could be over by then, thus negating a delay in receiving the paycheck.
As for the ‘sugar scrubs’, have they been approved by local regulatory acencies? Have they been tested by the FDA, since they do use a food ingredient. Did she acquire a local license? Is her ‘factory’ zoned for commercial business? Did she originate the formula or did she acquire it from someone else? If acquired, did she pay for it or is she paying royalties? And we need to see her mother’s tax returns for the last 7 years.
These are just some of the questions she should be forced to answer before subjecting the public to her ‘invention’/’creation’.
[Heather, your feelgoodism story falls apart. Try harder.]
When the IRS finds out she doesnt report her income, shell get an early lesson about how much our government transfers money from productive workers to the layabouts.
I guess this is another single parent home. North Potomac a poor community? Probably not. Lastly if mom is having financial problems missing a pay check on a probable 100k income she need a better budget.
Hope she makes enough to buy a newspaper so she can give the Help Wanted section to her mom.
So, her mom has gone ONE paycheck without getting paid, and her mom is already throwing her child into probably illegal child labor?
Her mom works for the department that would probably shut down her daughter because she is selling food that may not have been properly prepared, and almost certainly does not meet the new FDA requirements for ingredient, allergy, and calorie labeling.
What a pathetic comedy. Since she’s “nonessential she should be fired. LOL
