Brazil's Bolsonaro takes a number for a U.S. military base

So much for Mitt Romney's claim that the U.S. has alienated its allies.

Actually, they're lining up, and not just to be friends, but to ask for U.S. military bases stationed on their soil.

But when was the last time you heard of nations lining up to ask for U.S. military bases? Not under President Obama, that's for sure.

The latest is Brazil, whose new president, Jair Bolsonaro put the idea on the table. The Russians over at RT News, naturally, noticed:

Brazil's newly-sworn-in right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro has said that he might consider hosting a US military base in the future and called a Brazilian embassy move to Jerusalem a done deal in a new interview on Thursday.

Bolsonaro, dubbed the 'Trump of the Tropics' for his rhetoric, uncannily similar to that of US President Donald Trump, lived up to his nickname as he floated the idea of welcoming US soldiers on a permanent basis, reiterated his support for Israel, while calling Venezuela 'a dictatorship' and Russia its enabler.

In an interview with SBT broadcaster on Thursday, Bolsonaro said that while he considers physical presence of foreign forces a symbolic move in a globalized word, he is open to the idea of hosting US troops on Brazilian soil.

I’m flattered that he would want to invite us in, but we need to tread carefully here. Those Brazilian communists aren’t gone yet.

Maps showing US military bases around the world. Apparently, we have oodles of bases called “Lilly pads.” They have 200 or fewer personnel. (These maps makes the height of the British Empire seem small by comparison.)

I would be very cautious about building military bases in socialist-inclined countries. Sure, they may be aware of the pitfalls of that ideology today, but as we've seen repeatedly, the winds of fortune change rapidly in these bush-league republics, and thousands of American lives could be jeopardized, as well as billions in treasure.

They would need a much longer track record before I'd be convinced.

Why would we want or need a military base in Brazil?

Treaty’s are made with NATIONS, not Governments. Just get ENOUGH leftists in Brazil to agree. No need for a majority of them. It will reinforce the Monroe Doctrine. With a nations support Russia would not dare mess with us. Seems like Venezuela is ripe. And Cuba?

Does it help us strategically in the South Atlantic especially with so much of China moving into Africa?

Exactly. Brazil is already the most militarily powerful country in South America and has little to fear from its neighbours, and the US doesn’t really need a springboard to take on any of the tiny, inconsequential South American countries that are hostile to the US when a USN carrier group has more than enough firepower to, if neccessary, wage war on it.

Interesting news in light of the recent report that Venezuela (bordering Brazil, of course) has agreed to let Russia build a bomber base on one of its islands.

We don't necessarily. He/they do. It would be a major economic shot in the arm for Brazil. Look at what has happened to puerto rico since the US Navy left. I suspect they have lost 10s of millions if not more because of the US navys departure.
