-On 17 December 2018, at about 7 p.m. on State Street in Madison, Wisconsin, a 21-year-old open carrier and his friend were hanging out when his weapon was grabbed by a homeless man. At 7 p.m. it was well below freezing. Heavy coats, hats, and gloves were indicated.
State Street runs from the University of Wisconsin to the State Capitol. It is about nine blocks long and is usually crowded with pedestrians, many of which are students. There are numerous bars and restaurants, as well as the Student Union and Memorial Library, Library Mall, and the Wisconsin Historical Society near the West end of the street.
The 21-year-old open carrier was from Black Earth. Black Earth is a nearby small town. The Second Amendment activist had a shotgun, two pistols, and a large knife/machete. He was attempting to make political points while hoping to strike acquaintance with some girls, maybe get some phone numbers.
Melvin Bogus, 39, with no permanent address and well known to police, was also hanging out on State Street.
BogusThere is an arrest record for an inmate the same age, named Melvin F. Bogus, from 2006.

Poor holster?
Open Carry makes NO sense ... it is dangerous and it is bling! (Look at me, I have a gun and you don’t, I’m important, you’re not). With jerks like this around us, it is ALWAYS better to have a gun concealed and not let the jerks know it. (Spare me the 2nd Amendment speech about “but we have the right”...I know that!)
Poor judgment.
I never understood open carry, as long as concealed is an option.

Looking for the “like” button.
That will happen. LEO weapons get grabbed from time to time. And yes, Mr. OC needs to look for a new holster.
When I open carry, not often, I also conceal carry for the reason here—with open carry you are a target.
“The Second Amendment activist had a shotgun, two pistols, and a large knife/machete.”
Dayum!
I’m not a fan of open carry for myself but I do like people having the option.
Me too...
This is why I ccw.
Open carry is an open invitation to every nutcase you will encounter.
I approve of people having the freedom to decide to do stupid things, while at the same time trying to discourage them from doing stupid things.
Open carry is being stupid. Open carry without a good retention holster, and training in weapons retention and disarming techniques, is especially stupid.
I agree. Open carry is just showing people your cards. No need to stand out in a crowd and be a target.
It depends what you are trying to accomplish.
In this incident, the open carrier was doing so for political purposes, and to meet girls.
His primary purpose was *not* self-defense.
Concealed carry is a poor choice for making a political statement. No one knows you are carrying. It sends the message: I am ashamed of exercising my Second Amendment rights.
I suspect many who rail against open carry do so because they do not want to be involved in political statements. That is their choice.
But open carry has been very effective as a way of "openly" supporting the Second Amendment.
It was so effective in California, the leftist legislature banned it. Then the 9th cicuit upheld carry outside the home, until the case went to en banc.
The en banc ruling refused to rule on open carry.
Then the Hawaii case was brought forward on open carry, and carry outside the home was upheld. That case will likely also go to an en banc court of the Ninth Circuit.
In most other states, open carry has resulted in court cases and statutes advancing Second Amendment rights.
There are only five states that ban open carry in most public places, with or without a permit. They are: California, Illinois, Florida, South Carolina, and New York.

I guess he simply forgot to take his rifle.
IMO open carry should be 100% legal, but paradoxically, whenever I see it, I see a "shoot me first" yay-hoo with social issues.
LOL. Heck...I’d have gotten confused about which weapon to draw first in my own defense!
Open Carry makes NO sense ... it is dangerous and it is bling! (Look at me, I have a gun and you dont, Im important, youre not).
Absolutely. I would prefer to have the criminal wondering whose armed rather than knowing exactly who to target first. Whether it be a grab or a shot. The person who poses the most threat will be the first target. It’s a military tactic. But it is also not unknown to the criminal element.
