No indication of accident, suicide, or criminal intent.

I’ve been to the Barracks a couple of times. Go a block in any direction and it’s pretty scary.

must be another Marine the way the release is written, either a Marine or someone on staff there. This is heartbreaking. I go by there all the time and have always been a huge fan of the USMC.

Might be a bystander incident. Could be intent; not everyone in a barracks likes one another. Could be accident. We had an incident at another MCB in the early 70s where two gate guards got bored in the middle of the night and were playing quickdraw with their 45s. About the 4th draw one of them was startled by a shot, and the other was holding his side yelling you F#*#ing idiot, you shot me! Stupid shit happens when bored young guys play with weapons.

Hard to say what happened until the full details are released.

Security at the barracks has always been tight.
Have to see how this plays out.
Prayers for his family.
Semper Fi Marine!

I’ve been to the Barracks a couple of times. Go a block in any direction and it’s pretty scary.

The neighborhood has improved a lot the last couple years. Just drove through there on Friday.... right up 8th street to get on 395.

Regardless, prayers for this Marine.

Yeah, I’d go with stray shot. Lots of bystanders are shot in DC, and a few are killed - guy sitting in his car at a light, little girl eating ice cream in a park, etc.

Bingo, a very likely scenario. Soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen on watch during the holidays get bored. Not a good time to have teenagers, weapons, and ammunition together without much supervision. One of the reasons that many units decided to locate the ammunition with the SDO and arm the sentries and CO’s with bunk adapters, baseball bats, or something similar.

Just read another report that said that it appeared to be an accidental discharge by another Marine’s weapon. That does happen on rare occasion. The final investigation report will tell the full story.

I used to be one of these Marine guards.

I don’t know what happened here, but back in the 90’s we’d get gang bangers late at night flashing their hardware at us from cars.

One of the guard posts had a clear gunshot impact on the outside of the bullet resistant glass.

At this time of the day, 0530, all of the guards are behind secure booths, unless they are working a gate, or something similar. They don’t just stand around exposed to random gunfire.

I always used to worry about one post in particular, that was under the I-395 in a small over flow parking lot. It was technically across the street from the main Post gate.

I thought if I was going to catch a bullet, it would probably be at post 1 Alpha, we used to call it.

It was very dark, even during the day, and if someone really wanted to shoot a Marine, they’d have a decent chance of getting away afterwards.

I was very happy at the end of shift.

God bless the Marine and his family.

My prayers are with them.

I’ve been to the beer hall at the Norfolk Marine Barracks.
The guys in there don’t shoot people; they insert the bullets manually.

It’s a tough world out there. Short of a 20mm gatling gun, we were probably asking you to take more risk than was reasonable. Thanks for doing your duty.

Go a block in any direction and it’s pretty scary.

Used to be that way, but you've not been back for awhile. Still, at 5:30 a.m., anything can happen. Plus it's New Year's Day. Somebody might have been stumbling home after overdoing it last night.

These Marine guards are elite.

They’re infantry school and Marine security forces trained.

This is the first I’ve ever heard of a Washington DC guard being killed, and there have been tens of thousands of Marine guards over the years.

(Don’t get me wrong, I’ve known guards who have died, but none who were killed.)

Something went very wrong here.

I would be surprised if the Marine guard who was shot did anything wrong. He was on duty and presumably squared away. It’s the other guy I wonder about. People have been known to drink too much on New Year’s Eve and into the wee hours.
