The special court gave convicted Thuggee a choice: inform on and rat out your fellow Thuggee, or be executed by hanging. Many chose hanging. Many chose to inform on their fellows.
Once they were no longer useful as informants, they were branded with a T on the forehead for Thuggee and exiled, so they could not form up with former associates.
In 20 years, the British were able to roll up and extinguish Thuggee. Thuggee had been responsible for an estimated two million murders over the previous 500 years, in India. The British Raj is almost never given credit for eradicating this murderous cult.
It strike me that similar methods might be used with current Islamics.
