Most Leftists think that they are neutral and objective, but they don’t realize that they are as religious as a Baptist Fundamentalist or an Islamic jihadist. Everyone has a religion because everyone has an opinion about God, morality and the afterlife. Even if their opinion is that these things are unknowable or unimportant, that is still an opinion on a religious topic and so they have religious opinions or views. That is a religion. Their groupthink also makes them cultish in their mentality and behavior. They are utterly blind to their own darkness.

Also, these people who have abandoned conventional religion have a secular void in their life that they are trying to fill. Without God, there is no objective transcendent meaning or purpose to life. These people are trying to fill that void by "saving the planet." This gives them a cause bigger than themselves so that they can feel important. But at the same time, they don't feel the need to make anything significant personal sacrifice since the solution is to get their big government to make everyone else sacrifice. They get to feel good about themselves without any cost. It's a nice easy religion for them.
