Step 5: Populist leader is killed, along with his entire extended family, and anyone seen to support him.
Step 6: China openly takes over.

It won't end with Step 4. The history of Africa is that gaining independence is a lot easier than governing. The most functional parts of most African countries are infrastructure left behind by former colonial powers, the last of whom pulled out roughly a half century ago.
Still, it is a better place for China to be occupied than closer to home.
