Bats will starve, plants will not get pollinated, crops will fail, people will die.

Okay.......................

Then there’s this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VdBztcEOdI - the humane way to catch & release houseflies.

Skeeters fill an environmental niche. Remove them and something else will fill the void, for better or (more likely) for worse.

They should do something useful like eradicating fire ants. My ankles are covered with bites, and one got me on the thigh near my crotch yesterday while I was driving. They’ve killed off most of the ground nesting bird’s nests.
Bring back DDT. That’ll control the mosquitos where malaria is a problem

We used to have a plan. It worked pretty well. Malaria was being eradicated. The plan was DDT.

By what selective means, that doesn't effect other insects, arachnids, and other critters - all of which were put on earth for a purpose.

Or, are they just going to apply permethrin over the whole planet?

“...The article explains that Alphabet’s reason for wiping out mosquitoes isn’t primarily humanitarian but rather earnings focused:

Verily guards its technology closely. But it stands to reason that if it succeeds in making mosquito control easy and cheap enough, it could have a lucrative offering on its hands: Many governments and businesses around the globe might be glad to pay for a solution to their mosquito problems...”

LOL, Obviously Google has not checked with Rachel Carson.

Even though she's dead and burning in Hell, her Silent Spring Zombies will not allow it.

I’m not sure why I would buy a machine that’s a catch-and-release for house flies. There’s probably enough outside that my plan of catch-and-kill isn’t going to upset the eco-system.

While they’re at it, I hope gene drive technology can also be used to wipe out blackflies, ticks, chiggers, fire ants, poison ivy, and dozens of other noxious pests.

Yes! They have taken over southern Georgia. Their huge mounds are everywhere, and they are tricky to kill, and always come back.

Worse, my wife had gone through life not knowing that she was horribly allergic to fire ant stings. She found out the hard way, and had to take shots and start carrying an epi-pen. We are in Arizona now, and they don't seem to hang out in Phoenix.

“...they don’t seem to hang out in Phoenix.”

I didn’t know fire ants had that much sense.

I remember there being a study done of what would happen if mosquitoes were completely wiped out. The consensus seemed to be that there are a lot of midges and other harmless, non-biting flies whose maggots live in the water that would quickly move in to fill the vacant niche and keep the pond food chains going.
