ST. LOUIS—Authorities say five people were fatally shot and several others wounded in St. Louis in a 24-hour span this past weekend, just days after the city’s police chief announced a substantial drop in violent crime.
Police found the first victim, 33-year-old John Watson, dead around 7:40 p.m. on Dec. 22, in a vacant lot. Police responded around 4 a.m. on Dec. 23, to the fatal shootings of two other people—24-year-old Brian Henley and 25-year-old Kevin Brown. Henley was found in the driver’s seat of a vehicle with an uninjured 3-year-old girl inside, and Brown was in the street.
The fourth victim, 53-year-old Darren Avery, was found around 12:30 p.m. Sunday near a sidewalk. The fifth victim, 27-year-old Kourtney Steed, was found dead in a home just before 5 p.m. Sunday.
Twenty-four-year-old Romello Thomas was charged with first-degree murder in Steed’s death, but no suspects have been identified in the other killings. Police say there was no connection between the four homicide scenes. They said one involved a domestic situation and two others were drug-related. The circumstances of the fourth were unknown.
Weekend shootings also left several people wounded, including two men who survived gunshot wounds to the chest.

I was standing in the lobby of the Hampton Inn in downtown St. Louis when the security guard came running in shouting for everyone to get down (and take cover, I suppose).
A van went zooming under the canopy out to the main road.
I guess he found some guys messing with cars in the parking garage when one of them displayed his pistol. There was no gunfire.
This was the mid-1990’s. Normally, it wasn’t too bad down there as long as you didn’t wander off the beaten path.
But, that was more than 20 years ago.

St. Louis, the Chicago of Missouri...not sure which is safer...
St. Louis is FAR more violent than Chicago. People don’t realize just how horrendous its murder rate actually is. To put it in perspective, London has had a fairly “bad” year for murders, with around 135 of them in 2018. London is a city of 8.7 million. St. Louis has more murders than IN RAW NUMBERS that despite having only having 310,000. As a matter of rate, if London had St. Louis’s murder rate, it would have 5,742 murders rather than 135. St. Louis is third-world, off-the-charts, no-go-zone violent.

I’d never trust public stats; too much pressure to give a clean image even if people are being Mau Maued daily. If I wanted to know what a place was really like, I’d ask on forums like this one - much more honest, no reason to lie, no fear of repercussions for honesty.
Newark NJ is our local sh!thole (homicides and all), yet when Senator Spartacus Booker was trying to get Amazon to move HQ2 there he said - with a straight face - that Newark has an educated, well-trained workforce. Absolutely ridiculous; they don’t want jobs, they want to “play work” - and get paid for it.
