Santa is definitely not coming to towns in China

SHANGHAI — It took less than 24 hours for all the Christmas trees, lights and bells to disappear from a 27-story shopping and office complex in the Chinese city of Nanyang.

Even the giant teddy bear at the mall entrance wasn’t spared, said Ma Jun, who works at a tutoring company in the building.

“Everything is gone and cleaned,” she said.

Christmas continues to be a shopping festival across most of China, with huge trees adorning shopping malls in Shanghai and Beijing, but a growing emphasis on traditional culture by the ruling Communist Party and the systematic suppression of religion under President Xi Jinping are imperiling Santa Claus’s position.

At least four Chinese cities and one county have ordered restrictions on Christmas celebrations this year, according to official notices and interviews. Students, teachers and parents from 10 schools around China told the Associated Press that Christmas celebrations have been curtailed.

“The ongoing local reaction against Christmas is part of the wider sentiment since Xi took power,” said Zi Yang, a China expert at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore.

Xi is trying to broaden the appeal of the Communist Party by casting it as a crusader for Chinese tradition in a fast-changing world, he said. “Therefore, foreign cultural elements such as Christmas are placed on the chopping block.”

The seasonal humbug follows similar outbreaks of anti-Christmas rhetoric in 2014 and 2017. It appears not to be centrally organized, but rather a spreading resistance to foreign festivals by local authorities seeking to align themselves with the growing tide of cultural nationalism.

The squeeze on Christmas is an example of how efforts to “normalize” thinking bleed into the everyday lives of many Chinese. That push exploded into view this year through a crackdown on Christian churches

It appears that Christmas decorations are still a thing in China's big cities, but small town officials are sucking up to Xi by banning festive decorations. Maybe they'll get promoted.

I just finished living in Shanghai for two months. Certainly the grocery stores were full of Christmas-related paraphernalia. I saw some Christmas-related items inside other businesses. Of course all of it was of the Santa genre, there was nothing religious.

Just like any other Democrat-run city.

No crucifixes, Jesus, no Mary and baby in the manger or the three wise men?

WOW. This article was obviously written before the reported events happened. I am reading this on the morning of the 26 DEC. I am in China. And yes, the decorations and the lights are still on. And this is the morning.

Someone had best tell the idiots at the Post that the times zone changes GOES THE OTHER DIRECTION. China time is BEFORE American time.

Christmas is celebrated in China. The liberal press wants to make it seem like it is not, but it is. If you really want to read what is going on read this...

How Christmas is celebrated in China.

Now, for the record, I really wonder where this so-called author came up with this nonsense. The decorations will remain up for the next week or so, and decorations on restaurants and businesses will be up all year. They NEVER take them down.

macao

Hong Kong

Remember, boys and girls, the mainstream media stopped reporting "news" five decades ago. During the 1980's they consolidated into a rabid propaganda machine for the progressive left. They broke away from them in the early 2000's, and now operate independently.

The headline’s a bit misleading, and possibly deliberately so, in order to pull the reader in. But authors don’t write headlines - editors do. In the article, the author talks about how Christmas decorations have been taken down in a handful of secondary cities (that he knows of). But speaking of Christmas decorations, is it just Christmas trees, Santa, reindeer and the elves? Any baby in the manger, Mary, Jesus and Three Wise Men motifs?

They are certainly going all out lately to induce Americans to hate Chinese and Russians. They don’t want us paying too much attention to the nefarious schemes of the Deep State, is my guess.

Your pictures are true while being highly misleading. Hong Kong and Macau are, as part of the deal handing them over to China by the UK and Portugal, respectively, administered with a high degree of local autonomy that preserves many of the freedoms they had under European rule. The separation is so pronounced, to this day, that visa rejections for China are triple those for Hong Kong.
