Perfectly normal from the perspective of the business world. No need to delay. Get the new guy in now so he can get moving.

Shanahan is an awesome replacement for Mattis, because he has a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from MIT.

The group with master’s degree in mechanical engineering has higher IQ rating than any other group.

I sent this letter to the Editor on the subject.

From: Retain Mike Sent: Friday, December 21, 2018 9:47 AM To: World Letters (mailbag@worldmag.com) Subject: James Mattis Resignation

James Mattis shares the dilution of the previous administration that sent U.S. ground forces into two tiny enclaves in Syria. The U.S. Naval Institute article titled “Senators Quiz Military Leaders on U.S. Forces in Syria after ISIS” is interesting, because of the map presenting areas controlled by various armed factions. This colorful crazy quilt identifies Syrian Kurds and Aligned Forces, Syrian Government Forces, Islamic State Forces, Syrian Opposition Forces, Turkish Military Backed Forces, and some white areas for which evidently no one can hazard a guess. Remote from each other are two tiny circles labeled U.S./Coalition Military. The map does not account for Israeli airstrikes and threatened Turkish offensives into Syria against the Kurds. What an endless array of possible permutations for factions to fight each other with our handful of troops in the midst.

I wonder how one could have divined any meaningful level of involvement in the face of such turmoil? A comprehensive ceasefire seems remote. Even if achieved, then where do you find the diplomatic skills needed to sort out the combatants into peaceful agrarian villages like you see on Star Trek? If Mattis considers that is an imperative for U.S. foreign policy, then we are well rid of him.

President Trump successfully shuts down two more likely leaking, whining on the way out the door, deep state bureaucrats.

Mattis was confirmed by a 99-1 vote in the Senate. That should have been the first clue that he was no damned good.

Irritated with the criticism and fallout from Defense Secretary Jim Mattis' resignation...

The President is irritated with Mattis, not the fall out. If Mattis disagees with the President as much the letter implies, and is so dismissive of what the President has accomplished on every point Mattis brought up, he never should have accepted the position.

maybe Mattis can use his clout with the UN to renegotiate the obama /Iran nuclear deal he loved so much. Then he can focus on his pet Climate Change.

Good riddance of Mattis, the guy is a blatant socialist/liberal fruitcake. One of the worlds great War Mongers

you know.... if I worked for anyone in public office...
and I disagreed with his/her policy decisions... I would ask to speak with him..... and if that did’t satisfy me, I would courteously tender my resignation, yes, but without all the public criticism that so many workers are publicizing against PDJT

I would just quietly tender my resignation and if asked by the media, simply state I had decided it was an appropriate time for me to move on in life, period, end of file

Absent some kind of super super super serious situation, hard to imagine, I would never think to go public with criticism against my employer.... it .. .used to be.. just NOT DONE THIS WAY

it seems to have started in earnest against PDJT in particular

there’s something going on..something sinister.. it appears to be orchestrated.... (in which event, it almost has to be more SorozNazi seditious orchestration and bribe money?)

we will see. But no president has been so shabbily treated by both folks he has given good employment opportunities to......... and by our Goebbelsesque lying mass media)

no president has been so shabbily mis=treated

Every incoming cabinet member should be required to take the Trump Oath : I hereby pledge to support the Trump agenda, the agenda the president ran on and was elected by the American people to implement.

We've had enough of these appointed bureaucrats taking on the role of policymaker in defiance of the president. GTFO.

Everyone who has their pantaletas in a wad over this is showing their ignorance-that is how resignation/termination is handled in the world of private sector business-if you disagree with the CEO’s management strategies and company policy, then clear out your desk, collect the agreed-upon severance pay and leave. But if you are fortunate enough to be asked to stay on-with pay-to assist in the transition, you don’t bite the hand that fed you by openly criticizing policy in a letter you leak to the press...

Mattis, a Marine, a hero, a very good guy, became a swamp dweller, somewhere in his 40+ years of service to our Country.

I'm sorry I have to say. F*** him. As a Vet, it breaks my heart, every time I have to go against a Marine, but in 1959 I hit the Marine Heavy Weight Boxing Champion in the nose, with a full bottle of long neck Bud, split his face wide open, he bleed like a stuck pig, shook his head, and put me in the hospital, with a concussion, for three days.

To bad. He really did like that woman, and I should have followed my first instincts and kicked him in the jewels and bit his nutx off.

It turned OK, he went to the Brig for 30, I went to re-hab for 30, we both lived thru it...Thank You Baby Jesus, Merry Christmas.

The President badly needs someone he respects who’s fully informed about the Deep State infestation disaster to thoroughly vet prospective cabinet members. If he had one two years ago we’d have been spared a whole lot of trouble.

Mattis is the man you want running our total military in a large-scale war - the kind Congress has to actually declare war for. He’s chomping at the bit for a full-on fight with a definitive end, military conquest.

Except we aren’t in a declared war, only a few pointless skirmishes.

Mattis could easily end those skirmishes, except then we’d own Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria ... and those cultures would be our problem outright, trying to manage people who don’t even know what a fork is.

Win, or get out.
Mattis is the guy you want when “win” is actually desirable.
We need a guy who can manage preparedness for a major conflict, and fielding minor skirmishes ... that’s not Mattis.

Very smart by Trump. Why allow this guy to stick around if he disagrees with the program, especially after his letter.

Moreover, we were told days ago that this was the end of the world cuz Mattis is gone-—except he wasn’t. Now fake news has to backtrack on why he wasn’t already gone.
