Defense Secretary Jim Mattis’ resignation, which shocked Washington’s national security establishment and rattled America’s allies, was sealed in a fateful 18-hour period that saw President Trump resolve to withdraw troops from Syria – alarming Pentagon officials who see America’s role in the region as crucial.

For Mattis, the president’s order was the final straw, Fox News is told.

“Make no mistake – Jim Mattis is resigning in protest over the president's national security policies,” a senior U.S. defense official told Fox News.

Then we know that killing Americans is more important to them than anything. Good riddance

The left should be thrilled with Trump. Aren’t they always trying to dismantle the military?

While 2,000 troops sounds like a large number it is not a number needed to establish superiority in the long run. Mostly just a show of the flag for show sake. The only reason they haven’t been overrun is air support.

There are troops in Afghanistan that weren’t even in kindergarten when we went in.

Keep on keeping on isn’t a winning strategy.

Trump increased the troop level in Afghanistan and it only worsened. It is time to accept the truth.

Someone posted on another thread that Mattis said we can’t secure the border AND fight in Syria, etc. So, Trump says, if those are the options, pull the troops out of Syria, etc.

Read it on the internet so must be true.

And...? Just get another Marine to put in charge. We can run anything.

“alarming Pentagon officials who see America’s role in the region as crucial”

“Pentagon officials” aren’t supposed to be determining these sort of things - e.g. crucial roles for America.

We are not a military junta.

We can’t fix some of these quagmires like Syria - even though half a million have been killed. At best I would say we could hire the French Foreign Legion or someone else to do something.

The Leftist Scum hated Mattis when he came in and demonstrated it fluently, now that he will say nasty things about PDJT, they love him like their Hollywood whores.

Our role in Syria is crucial to... to what?

Middle East peace? They don’t want us there.
Oil supply? Were the worlds major supplier now.
Geopolitical world order? Our being in Syria is destabilizing the world order and hindering peace....

I don’t see the point. Maybe if THE world is concerned about peace in Syria then THEY should contribute troops and money as well?

Nancy Pelosi is really upset about this.

I think she “tinkled” on her shoes.

‘National Security issues” ALSO include the Border with Mexico.

Do those in the military, who are used to being all over the world, even understand that?

Tough call. Trump is wrong but so is Mattis. ISIS was a Assad and Saddam byproduct Russian brainchild, from the experiments in the Chechen war.

We cannot win unless we focus on these guys. Deploying soldiers to fight IsIs itself is as stupid as not fighting Pakistan/China for Afghanistan and North Vietnam to save South Vietnam.

If the 20 largest terrorist groups strengthen to attack us in another 9/11 style attack, then we should make sure we wipe them out next time.

How about we stay out of their business. And if we are going to DO business, lets do it in an honest and not heavy handed way.

I would gleefully pay another $0.50 a gallon for Gas if it meant out sons and daughters wouldn’t go over there and die.

Get out. Stay out. And flatten anyone who attacks us.

It is pretty simple.

Exactly

We are not a military junta.

Not yet, and the reelection of PDJT will delay it even longer.

If he doesn’t agree with the President’s policies then the honorable thing to do is resign. Which he did. And Mattis is right; the President deserves someone in the spot who agrees with his policies.
