President Trump said Thursday evening that Defense Secretary James Mattis will be retiring in February, in a shock announcement adding to the list of the president's outgoing Cabinet members after his second year in office.

Mattis will step down "with distinction" after serving in his role for two years, the president said on Twitter.

"During Jim’s tenure, tremendous progress has been made, especially with respect to the purchase of new fighting equipment," Trump tweeted. "General Mattis was a great help to me in getting allies and other countries to pay their share of military obligations. A new Secretary of Defense will be named shortly. I greatly thank Jim for his service!"

It doesn’t say “Syria”. He may be upset over the withdrawal of troops which he may think gives the Middle East to Russia/Iran. I’d like very much to know exactly what General Mattis is concerned about in detail. The timing must be related to the Syria announcement yesterday.

Only real question is who is right? Trump or Mattus!

In principle, who can argue with Mattis when, in his letter, he talks about his dual beliefs that we should have strong relations and cooperation with our allies, and should also be steadfast in countering adversarial actions by Russia and China? I’m sure POTUS would agree with this, in principle, as well.

But the question is, how do you achieve such things? POTUS’s approach to achieving these things is more flexible than the tradition approach followed by people like Mattis. POTUS is not satisfied with the status quo and is seeking a better solution, one in which allies behave like allies, and where adversaries are confronted when their actions harm our national interest, but not otherwise.

What a horrible sweeping condemnation! What on earth are you exactly talking about? Have you served under his command?

Isn’t that the purpose of Bob Mueller’s unconstitutional raid on a lawyer’s office? Attorney-client privilege ended that day.

I’ve long held that the real goal is not impeachment but dissuading anyone in the Republican Party from serving under President Trump.

The cabal of BHO, ValJar, Clintons, Media Matters and all of their staff both in and out of government are wholly united on one plan: destroy any good which Donald Trump hopes to achieve, and if possible, cause his defeat in 2020.

So President Trump appointed a Democrat as his Secretary of Defense? That’s horrible.

10 I’m sorry he is going but I think 17 years in Afghanistan, Iraq and now Syria is enough. Something big is about to happen with Turkey and I think POTUS wants our troops out of there.

Actually we have had a military presence in Iraq for 28 years. Remember the no-fly zones in northern and southern Iraq started by POTUS #41 GHWB? I have mixed feelings, especially with Russia in Syria.

Trump thought the fat globalist Jarhead would follow orders and put aside the desires of his Democrat handlers. Trump was wrong. No honor, no shame.

plus he’s 68 yrs old.

Must say he looks older than that, but that’s the cost of long and faithful service in the Marine Corps. I can’t help but think the Syrian pullout convinced him it was time to move on. Mathis knows that ISIS is like a pack of rats. If there are but two survivors, within a heartbeat there will be thousands. Syria will now become Putin’s protectorate.

The last president didn’t have people leave because they had no career, or life, outside government.

"Reading between the lines sounds to me like Mattis is pissed about the end of neocon leadership."

Off topic, but is John Bolton not fully on board with Trump's foreign policy?

Its too much. We could well take to the air anyone who needs air cover. I like the Kurds and I wish we could help them, but we can’t do this forever.

Hearing UpChuckie Smuckie and Pewlosi going on and on about Mattis is convincing me POTUS is right to accept his resignation. Anytime these two are all upset about someone leaving it’s suspicious.

Did you read what he wrote? Mattis is having a tantrum about Syria.

POTUS has massively increased military spending resulting in trillion dollar deficits due to Democrats demanding equal spending on defense.

I see how much Mattis appreciates what Trump has done for the military at great political expense. He’s stabbing POTUS in the back in the middle of a historic shut down battle. That ungrateful bum can leave DOD now for all I care. Good riddance.
