US Officials Send Mixed Messages on Withdrawal of Troops from Syria

White House and Pentagon officials sent out mixed signals Wednesday on the future of U.S. military forces in Syria.

President Donald Trump sent out a tweet at 6:29 a.m. Eastern Time saying, "We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency."

The Wall Street Journal then published a story that quoted a U.S. official as saying the Pentagon has an order to "move troops out of Syria as quickly as possible."

The Pentagon, however, sent out a statement at 9:29 a.m. that indicated a withdrawal of the approximately 2,000 U.S. troops in Syria may not be imminent.

"At this time, we continue to work by, with and through our partners in the region," Army Col. Rob Manning said in a statement, using the same language the Pentagon has used throughout the mission to support Syrian Democratic Forces fighting Islamic State forces in the war-torn country.

It looks to me like as 'as quickly as possible' means that we are not pulling out until our objectives are met (i.e. mainly wiping out the last pockets of ISIS resistance). This is a good thing IMO.

When the Pentagon negates the presidents statements a day later, isis is the least of our problems.

I thought the 9th Circuit Court was in charge of the U.S. Military.

The pentagon keeps over riding the CIC. I’m sick of it.

If we can’t protect the homeland why the hell are we protecting other countries? Screw them. No wall no war.

Yeah, at this point it’d be crazy to think he was serious about ending these ‘stupid wars’, amirite?!

Yes, Trump should do exactly as Obama did. Pull out too early from Iraq which caused the rise of ISIS to go hacking and slashing through the middle east in the first place. Let's just repeat prior mistakes because we want to see 2000 troops who are not in imminent danger leave Syria.

What exactly did the president say, because it looks like the Pentagon is contradicting the WSJ article—not the president. Fake news!

Remember we have few friends in the area. We also, have many enemies. We are in there at the request of people like Israel, the curds, and Saudi Arabia. But so called allies like Turkey and the EU are difficult to depend on. We should leave when we can.

Nobody on this sight should be advocating to stay in Syria. The public does not understand the issues. Its a game of spy vs. spy. While Fox may report that its ISIS (the bad guys) vs. America (the good guys). Thats far from the truth. There is no black and white, only shades of gray. Don’t let the military vendors get you thinking that this is good vs. evil. They only want to sell weapons. And frankly if the military could chose, fortify the border vs. Syria, I am on the side of troups defending our border.

Seems pretty clear to me. Now if he doesn’t do it they will be criticizing him for that.

[When the Pentagon negates the presidents statements a day later, isis is the least of our problems.]

Trump can fire Mattis the very next minute. Here’s the scoop. With most politicians, what you see isn’t what you get. With Trump, that’s true to a head-spinning extent. Trump says he wants a wall. He could veto every appropriations bill until he gets a standalone bill on the wall. But he hasn’t done that. He could go to every district in which a Republican has voted against a wall, and urge voters to remove him during the next primary. He hasn’t.

All this stuff about the deep state presupposes locked-in civil service people pulling the levers behind the scenes. The reality is that these people can be fired if they do not follow orders. And firing Mattis would be a fine initiative pour encourager les autres. But Trump hasn’t fired Mattis. The correct conclusion is that Trump is just shining segments of his supporters on. I think, politically-speaking, that it is one of the strangest things I’ve seen a politician do, but maybe it will help him win re-election in 2020. We can only hope.

I support my president in this. America First means exactly what it says. We need to fix America’s issues and quit trying to change the rest of the world. Let them blow themselves up. We have terrorists at our border—they are the threat America needs to be concerned with, as well as the domestic enemies within—as well as the ones holding political office.

....Russia, Iran, Syria & many others are not happy about the U.S. leaving, despite what the Fake News says, because now they will have to fight ISIS and others, who they hate, without us. I am building by far the most powerful military in the world. ISIS hits us they are doomed!

"We should leave when we can."

I am in agreement with this. We should leave when our stated objectives are accomplished.

1. When ISIS is wiped out. From what I've read there are still a couple thousand ISIS fighters holed up in Syria.

2. After these negotiations are concluded and Iran withdraws its troops and we get concrete assurances from Turkey and Assad that our allies the Kurds are not retaliated against. They should be aware that we are still close by and able to strike to assist our Kurdish allies.

After these things happen, then we should get out of Syria. I don't understand why this rush to pull 2000 troops out of Syria. We don't have body bags coming home everyday like the height of the Iraq war. For the whole Syrian operation, the best I have found is that there have been a total of 5 deaths in Syria, 2 of them non combat related. In other words, those 2 could have happened during a training exercise in the states. There has been one this year.

I want us out, and I’ve wanted that since the usurper sent us in there with no American interests at stake. If we coordinate with Assad and he’s okay with us killing more ISIS before we go, I’m okay with a few months of delay. If he wants us gone, I’d like to see us pull out as quickly as it can safely be done. Let Assad and Russia kill them all with us out of the way.

Note: I don’t like or trust Assad, but I consider him less of a danger to decent people than any of the alternatives in Syria.

He said they are coming back, and they are coming back now. Not eventually. Not as soon as possible. Now.

"We have terrorists at our border"

And if we don't get rid of ISIS we'll have a lot more at our border and inside our border. You do realize that we have found many American citizens in ISIS. We also have found many European citizens in ISIS. If those people leave the battlefield they all have passports that can get them easily into America. Just as easily as you or I can fly to Paris, they can fly to a United States town near you.

The reason there's an ISIS in Syria to begin with was bipartisan support for "the Arab Spring" and regime change in Syria. If sane voices had prevailed against the interventionists, we wouldn't have had this mess to begin with. It was basically a repeat of what happened in Libya, except for the fact that Assad is still nominally in power.

Until 2011, Syria was a stable country with no ISIS or Al Quaeda presence. As soon as interventionists started egging on the rebels, the nation imploded and became a breeding ground for the Al Nusra front and ISIS. In spite of this, there are people who look at Syria as an example of why we need more intervention and "regime change" rather than less.
