Buttigieg sounds Germanic, and there are a lot of Germans in the Midwest. But actually, Buttigieg's father is Maltese. He's an English professor at Notre Dame. Most of Buttigieg Senior's work involves translating and writing on the Italian Marxist thinker Antonio Gramsci, so I guess he qualifies as part of the academic left.
I'm not saying it's all some kind of Marxist conspiracy - if Pete were making the long march through the institutions, he'd probably have made different life decisions - but today's Democratic Party isn't your father's or grandfather's Democratic Party.
