NBC Hypes Calls for Gun Sale Waiting Period to Prevent Suicide

Saturday's Today show on NBC spent almost two minutes highlighting an obituary for a suicide victim in Vermont that is part of an effort to encourage new laws that would require a 24-hour waiting period before purchasing a gun .....

Co-host Sheinelle Jones set up the segment by recalling that the CDC recently reported that the number of gun-related deaths per year is at the highest level in about 40 years.

Co-host Peter Alexander then added: "This morning, an obituary for a young man who took his own life is going viral, his parents now calling for stricter gun control so that other famlies might be able to avoid the same heartbreak."

Correspondent Tammy Leitner began the report with a soundbite of Alyssa Black, whose son, Andrew, bought a gun and then used it to commit suicide about four hours later. After noting that his obituary tells readers details about his life, Jones then added: "But the obit also included an unusual request -- that friends and family lobby state lawmakers to change the law and require a wait period for firearm purchases 'to provide a cooling off period to guard against impulsive acts of violence.'"

After reiterating the record number of gun-related suicides, Leitner then lamented: "Only nine states and the District of Columbia require a mandatory waiting period to purchase certain firearms. Vermont is not one of them."

Leitner then underscored: "Twenty-four hours that might have given their son a fighting chance."

Not mentioned was that those contemplating suicide can simply choose a different method as evidenced by the fact that a number of countries, like Japan, have more restrictive gun laws than the U.S., but still have higher suicide rates than the U.S.

"Leitner then underscored: "Twenty-four hours that might have given their son a fighting chance."" Sorry for the loss but would there be a hue and cry for locking medicine cabinets had the person gotten into the parents meds and OD'd? Some sort of no start feature for their car had a closed garage running car method been used? A 24 hour wait on materials that could be used to hang oneself? Typical attack the inanimate object instead of addressing the issue. I've known 5 folks who did themselves in with firearms, one running car closed garage, one OD and was familiar with a jumping incident. Who's responsible? The person that did it. Not the tool used.

NBC is despicable enough to exploit a suicide to push its agenda. Reason 42 why we hate the MSM.

If someone is serious about killing themselves, they’ll do it by whatever means. A waiting period for a gun isn’t going to deter them from a handful of pills, a tree at 90 miles an hour or jumping off a bridge.

The NRA has proposed that all news services have a 24 hour waiting period before announcing on ALL breaking news to allow time to prove it’s not fake news. IF we’re going to infringe on one right let’s get them all.

In Oregon liberals commit suicide by driving into a truck or large car in the oncoming lane. I’d rather have them use a gun.

Having read about many suicides over my life, one thing strikes me as being common. They are, for the most part, well planned. They aren’t generally a spur of the moment event.

I suspect a review of a thousand suicides would find very few where 24 hours would have made any difference in the outcome.

Many years ago I was in a lawsuit with my former business partner who lived thirty miles away. Among other problems, he’d become involved with a crime figure, even marrying the man’s daughter. I came home early one day to find my former partner leaving my neighborhood with a greasy looking hood in the passenger seat of his car. I decided I needed a gun right away. There was a 24 hour cooling off period in my county. I called a pawn shop gun dealer I’d sat gun show tables for in the next county where there was no waiting period.

Funny story. He was filling out the paperwork and said, “You’ve never shown an interest in anything like this. (Hidden hammer Smith Model 49) You’re strictly Civil War. What’s up?” I told him what happened and he flipped the paperwork onto the floor and stepped on it, saying, “The gun’s a gift. Best of luck.”

Several years later, I gave it back.

Don't know.

Gravity's waiting period is about 9.8 m/s^2.

I think it’s so serious that it would be awful if the powers that be over at PMSNBC all got so depressed about the 2nd amendment that they decided to end it all. That would be A SHAME.
