On Nov. 20, Commissioner MaryEllen Elia issued guidance empowering local school boards to evaluate private schools and to vote on our right to continue educating our students.
The state government now requires private schools to offer a specific set of classes more comprehensive than what students in public schools must learn. Our schools must offer 11 courses to students in grades 5 through 8, for a total of seven hours of daily instruction. Public schools have less than six hours a day of prescribed instruction. Private-school teachers will also be required to submit to evaluation by school districts.
At a press conference announcing the new guidelines, a reporter asked Ms. Elia what would happen if a yeshiva didnt alter its Jewish-studies emphasis to conform to her mandate. She responded that parents would be notified they need to transfer students in as little as six weeks. And if they didnt? Theyd be considered truant, and thats another whole process that gets triggered.
Government may have an interest in ensuring that every child receives a sound basic education, but it has no right to commandeer our schools curricula.
-snip
The new guidance should offend people of all faiths, and others are speaking out. The New York State Council of Catholic School Superintendents recently told Ms. Elia that they reject the guidance and are directing all diocesan Catholic schools not to participate in any review carried out by local public school officials. We expect others will join them.
While these new guidelines affect all religious schools, we know they were directed at the yeshiva system in particular.

I am willing to bet that the religious school kids, Jewish and Christian alike, outperform public school kids by a wide margin on standardized tests in all subjects. The moral and constitutional case doesn’t rest on that, but as a practical political matter, it’s a good data point to embed in all discussions and, eventually, litigation.

That was my point.
Maybe I did not say it right. I was kind of in a hurry.

My point is, when one chooses to live in Sodom, Gomorrah, or Gotham, You seem to have mixed up New York, City of, with New York, State of.
This is being done by the STATE of New York which is not Sodom, Gomorrah, or Gotham.

The State is overstepping its authority. Given that it’s New York, though, they’re getting what most of them voted for.

Dont understand why Jews are complaining about this? You vote, in high percentages, for totalitarian communists at at all levels of government, and you are getting what you voted for.
That is an ignorant comment on so many levels.
In contrast to this majority, Orthodox Jews, who as a group (excluding the declining so-called modern-Orthodox segment) tend to have fewer adherents who are university-educated, who eschew cosmopolitanism and tend to be more insular, get their news and opinions from their own inside sources, are often economically disadvantaged, and share a socially conservative worldview closer to that shared by evangelicals than to the rest of American Jewry, would vote overwhelmingly for the Republican and more right wing candidate.
A video released on the eve of the election of Ivanka Trump and her husband paying a visit to the grave of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, the endorsements of Trump by Orthodox affiliated newspapers like The Jewish Press and the Long Island Jewish World, and even the repeated reports of Orthodox Jews claiming Trump was better for Israel (along with reports that many of them living as ex-pats in Israel voted as a majority for him) suggested that even though Trump was a man whose values seemed diametrically opposed to Orthodox Judaism and attracted anti-Semites among his vocal supporters, implied the Orthodox would embrace his candidacy like their evangelical counterparts.

Maybe but what is happening is she hates any school that is not run by the state.
People are focusing on the fact that the Hebrew schools are the first to organize a revolt but it is aimed at ALL private schools.
Including the schools my church runs.
Never mind that we consistently take students that are failing in public schools and turn them into literate graduates.
All students must be fed to the state school monster.

My point is, when one chooses to live in Sodom, Gomorrah, or Gotham, you cannot legitimately claim you didnt know what has been going on around you for many many decades. And, you have no reason to be surprised when the natives eventually get around to coming for you and your children.
Hypocrisy; why are you even in our country?

Excellent point. But we can also argue they first came for the Jews.

Religious Jews attend religious schools and are mostly politically conservative. Left leaning democrat voting Jews by and large are secular and do not send their children to religious schools.

“Do they realize what they are doing?”
And so the parents of public schooled children take a look at the standards imposed on Private schools will get pissed and aske,”Why are you demanding more of them and giving our public schools less?”
Yup...the Dem’s are opening up a quagmire alright!
To: SuperLuminal
They voted for it... Just live with it... That's pretty presumptuous.
I'm guessing the most of the folks who this is being imposed on would not be the ones to be voting dem.
Not everyone who lives in NYS votes Dem or for Cuomo.
Many of us have to deal with what is inflicted on us by the rest of the electorate.
