A statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the famed Indian independence leader, has been removed from a university campus in Ghana's capital, Accra.
University of Ghana lecturers began a petition for its removal shortly after it was unveiled in 2016 by India's former President Pranab Mukherjee.
The petition said Gandhi was "racist" and African heroes should be put first.
In the wake of the row, Ghana's government at the time said the statue would be relocated.
Lecturers and students told the BBC that the statue, originally located at the university's recreational quadrangle, had been removed on Wednesday.
The university confirmed this, saying that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration was responsible.
Law student Nana Adoma Asare Adei told the BBC: "Having his statue means that we stand for everything he stands for and if he stands for these things [his alleged racism], I don't think we should have his statue on campus."

What a shame that the BBC and the American networks refused his request! Why, if they had only let him do this, think of the millions of lives that would have been saved when the bloodshed stopped and the global reins of power were handed over to the Nazis and Japan.
His super-human intelligence wasn't just on the global scale, though. It extended to his everyday life, as seen in his quick adoption of new nutritional fads such as drinking a glass of his own urine once a day. The health benefits of this are probably astounding, and no doubt he'd still be alive today if not for the assassin.
I wonder if there are any bronze statues of him holding a glass of urine up in the air like when someone drinks a toast?

If they insist on ‘putting Africa heroes first!’, then they need to get some heroes. There are many famous people from Africa, some known around the world, such as Nelson Mandela.
However, many of this small group come from a communist background, and have advocated for genocide of competing tribes.
There are most likely many honorable people in that continent worthy of recognition, but meanwhile, Gandhi did no harm in teaching others about peaceful means of negotiation.
Maybe that’s what this is really about.
Somebody wants change, and they don’t care how many get killed in order to achieve that change.
Martin Luther King was discarded in this country by some for much the same reasons.
The proposal to surrender to Hitler/Tojo was useless because there was no chance it would ever be adopted.
Even bigger crime by Gandhi+Nehru+Congress party was to establish a style of government in 1947 newly independent India which kept the rich untouched, but the middle class got demolished and kept India poor and dependent on foreign aid for 3 decades. There is no worse crime than keeping 100’s of million people in poverty.
Thank goodness for finally defeat of the Congress party 3 decades after independence who began capitalistic reforms. Result is all classes of people are way more prosperous than the Gandhi/Nehru style government. For the last couple of decades, Indian economy has grown twice as fast as any of the developed economies.
