San Francisco (CNN Business)California regulators want to tax text messages to increase funds for programs that bring connectivity to underserved residents.
A new surcharge proposed by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) wouldn't be a per-text tax, but a monthly fee based on a cellular bill that includes any fees for text-message services. Most carriers offer a flat fee option for texting, and already charge a similar fee for other services included in the bill such as phone calls. The exact structure of the charge would vary from carrier to carrier........

Because one free Carlos Slim Obamaphone is never enough.
“I hope the news of this tax spreads widely. I am sure it will be very popular, “
I used to cringe every time California did something politically stupid. However, now, I relax secure in the knowledge they have done something that brings them closer to revolt. (Of course, like our open border with the rest of the third world, California’s open border allows them to export their potential revolutionaries to other states; slowing down the pace of the political pendulum. Not sure how this will all play out.)
Those Californians sure LOVE to be taxed. They are so civilized, not like those French.
I guess we get to pay these CA taxes on the free Obama-phones used in CA(including those that illegals get)
Will Mexifornians dump Apples?
Again?
It’s Cully4neeya, who cares?
Don’t care. California voters have made their bed, I don’t care what crazy stuff their far-left legislature and Governor foist on them.
Over the past ten years, approximately five million people have moved away from the state of California. The ones who remain love to be taxed ,
That is the idea. Even snowflake stoners eventually have enough.
Next, Commiefornia will tax the air you breathe.
Good way to lose your youth voter base.
Seems like two areas to tax to pay for them would be rather simple changes...
For the utilities commission, simply charge the sales tax on the retail price of the cell phone they’re getting for ‘free’ (aka on the taxpayer dime.) After all, everyone ELSE has to pay the sales taxes on phones carriers give away. And trust me, no one’s going to walk away going ‘$20 in taxes is too much to pay’, they’ll just whine a little.
And while they’re at it, also remove the free bags from food stamp recipients. The rest of us have to schlep the bags to the market, they can too.
I wish my state would tax only text messages sent by teenagers. Double if they’re in a car.
I know this was sarcasm, but in a state where citizens are not allowed to collect rain water, who knows what those idiots will propose.
Good for them!
You like that big government every election? Then embrace the suck!
We should mass text people there every day just to get them to respond and lose money.
They just want to make sure EVERYONE shows up for the revolution at the right time and in the right place!
They already DO tax the air. It’s what the CO2 tax does. They have it!
Unfortunately, no it won’t. It will be some fixed taxed, buried in with all the others, and the youth voter base, half who probably have their phones paid for by mom and dad, will never even notice.
