When an officer encounters an armed person they have no way of knowing that individual’s intentions. Guessing wrong can be fatal. The difficulty is how does the good guy convincingly communicate their good intentions in an encounter that will be measured in seconds?

1.) Drop the gun.

2.) Put your hands up.

I don’t know. Maybe drop the gun and put your hands in plain sight? Just saying

The article suggests there are numerous ways of understanding the intent of the armed person. The encouragement was to have the officer use that information to make better decisions in dealing with the stressful situation.

If you CCW the carry a badge with you that you can display around your neck if you find yourself in a mode were the gun is necessary. Even if it is a fake one bought on ebay.

I've seen undercover cops that look like bums with badges that you would never think were cops.
