Whoa: Students Asked if Parkland Shooter 'Deserves to Die' In School Assignment

Students at Coral Glades High School in Coral Springs, Florida, were given a rather shocking assignment: to take a quiz about whether or not Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooter Nikolas Cruz "deserves to die." To make matters even worse? Coral Glades is only a 10 minute drive from Stoneman Douglas so this should hit close to home.

Images of the quiz made its way around social media. Parkland survivor Cameron Kasky said the school board should be ashamed:

This worksheet was given to students in @BrowardSchools. I cannot begin to express how pathetic I find this. Our school
board should add this to the list of 1000+ reasons to be ashamed. pic.twitter.com/tEl3BzTLg0— Cameron Kasky (@cameron_kasky) December 7, 2018

Andrew Pollack, whose daughter, Meadow, was killed during the tragedy, also chided the assignment:

This is absolutely despicable.

Broward schools is now giving assignments to students on the shooter that murdered my daughter and 16 others.

Does anyone @browardschools have a brain? @RobertwRuncie pic.twitter.com/T3IjO5dOj6— Andrew Pollack (@AndrewPollackFL) December 7, 2018

The high school released the following statement on their website about the assignment:

Coral Glades High School administration was unaware that an assignment, which included insensitive content concerning Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, had been distributed to students today. The material was from a subscription-based publication, used as a curriculum resource. The school’s leadership has pulled the assignment, is instituting an approved review process of all such materials and regrets that this incident occurred. Broward County Public Schools is working with the publisher to make them aware of our concerns.

According to teachers, the assignment came from an outside workbook designed at "sparking conversations" around the death penalty, WABC-TV reported. The worksheet actually came from The New York Times’ Upfront, a magazine for high school students.

I suppose this was a very hard assignment for the students.

There appears to be nothing that Broward County liberals can’t screw up.

While I was in high school in 1970, a teacher wanted a debate on capital punishment. Nobody would take the pro side, so I volunteered. The situation, with more than a hundred students present, quickly became a near riot with people screaming at me. I never raised my voice, but continued to apply logic and the law as I understood it. Afterwards, the teacher and many of the class were angry with me for days. I had no feelings about capital punishment either way, at the time. I just took it as an assignment to debate. I got a bad grade.

What I’m saying is, this is a lose/lose assignment for the students. It should never have been assigned to them.

Ask the students if any of their peers are to blame for abusing and bullying the kid.

Cat Stevens would say “YES”

I’m Gonna Get Me a Gun (1967)
Cat Stevens

I’ve been demoralized too many times
But now I realize, Ah ah, no more.
I’m gonna get me a gun
I’m gonna get me a gun
And all those people who put me down
You better get ready to run,
‘cause I’m gonna get me a gun

I know my destiny is like the sun
You see the best of me when I have got my gun
I’m gonna get me a gun
I’m gonna get me a gun
And all those people who put me down
You better get ready to run,
‘cause I’m gonna get me a gun

Question doesn’t bother me. God forbid the porcelain children should be given an assignment that involves critical thinking.

“The worksheet actually came from The New York Times’ Upfront, a magazine for high school students.”

Not surprised to read that part. After all, when considering that this paragon of journalistic integrity had good ole Uncle Walter creating their narrative about the Soviet Union back in the 1930s.

Totally unacceptable for the illogical snowflakes and ignorant anti-whatevers being produced by the school system these days.

That’s assuming that Broward isn’t already the worst school system. They can’t be very far from that “honor” if indeed they don’t have that “honor”.

I’m probably going to have an unpopular view, but discussing hard topics helps kids learn thinking skills. I teach a 9th grade homeschool class once a week, and my students argued over the death penalty last month in a team policy debate. They had to research both sides thoroughly and be prepared to argue for or against with the toss of a coin. This would have been a very appropriate discussion to have after the debate as long as my students did not have connections to the people involved.

I did not see the worksheet, but I do agree it was too close to home for these particular students. Terrible judgement by the teacher.

I would spare his life in exchange for the death penalty for the Sheriff and the FBI agents who clearly ignored more than 40 requests for help even a request from the perp himself! This guy is mentally ill and these people did everything they could to keep this monster walking amongst us.

I often wonder why in the world some people really want the opinions of children who are not yet adult and cannot think critically. Their brains are not yet fully developed in addition to not being very wise yet.

“Does anyone @browardschools have a brain?” — Andrew Pollack

Obviously a rhetorical question.

My condolences to Mr. Pollack who has suffered the unthinkable.

I don’t see anything wrong with it. Does he deserve the death penalty. Defend your position.

The problem isn't that kids this age shouldn't be thinking about moral/philosophical questions like this. They should. The problem is that the public schools, which are run by SJWs from D.C. on down, who wouldn't know what critical thinking is if it bit them on the ass, are not an appropriate place for it. They may have been many decades ago but they are not now.
