Producing farmland even for free is very expensive to produce. For me in Wisconsin it was $3,800 per acre in cost. Seed, fertilizer, chemicals, pre harvest prep, harvest, machinery, depreciation, fuel, insurance, and taxes.

South Africa’s land is not particularly rich. That’s why many centuries ago, it only supported dispersed, nomadic tribes. It is quite dry, so large investments in irrigation and equipment must be made. Therefore, farms are large, as the land is mostly useless otherwise.
The first victim will be South Africa’s own banking system, as a lot of money is loaned to agriculture, which now won’t be repaid. Then the Rand will collapse. Then imports will begin to dry up, just as domestic food supplies drop.
