Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, a staunchly Catholic conservative career politician, has been elected as the successor to Angela Merkel as leader of Germany’s Christian Democrats.
Kramp-Karrenbauer won by just 25 votes following a nail-biting second round run-off against her main opponent, the multi-millionaire businessman Friedrich Merz.
Wiping away tears, Kramp-Karrenbauer said she would accept the post, and thanked the party for its support and trust in her, insisting she would give new impetus to the party as it seeks to claw back the millions of voters it has lost to rightwing populists and the Greens in recent years.
“We should harness the boost this competition has given us, and use it to propel the party’s success,” she said.

AKK....carbon-copy of Merkel. Leaves more conservative members of the CDU shaking their heads. They expected the Merkel era to end, and now, it just moves onto version two of Merkel. By the end of 2019, I expect a dozen-odd well known members of the CDU to just resign and quit politics.
If you look at polling, the Greens have moved up...very near 20-percent, and I think they have a fair chance of taking on the CDU and AKK in 2021....you might see the internal disenchantment reach the stage where the Greens could win the election and the Chancellorship.

Not everyone ages well. I am having beauty surgery in February. They wanted to schedule me for February 14 but I told them that is Saint Valentine’s Day so we made it the 18th. Funny they picked that day for beauty surgery.
I doubt that she wants her sons conscripted into a European army (and perhaps sent to subjugate Hungary or Catalonia), or beheaded by an culture enriching migrant.
I suspect that when Merkel leaves the stage, her successor will initiate some radical changes.
Not about age. It’s the look she is going for. She doesn’t have to go for the Elvis Costello.
