I dont know how they compare price wise to solar panels but they seem to offer a similar look. By accident, I hope, you've hit on the most important element of this oligarchy ruling.
It's not about how well it performs and the economic burden citizens will be saddled with.
It's about how it looks, virtue signaling to the nth degree and cost be damned.

Solar shingles have been a dream for a long time, but still aren't ready for prime time. See Bloomberg article "
Did Elon Musk Forget About Buffalo?" for a good review of Tesla's inability to deliver. The installed their shingles on a modest suburban house in San Jose at a cost of $100,000 and it took two weeks. Granted it's a demonstration house, but still that is a long way from commercial success targets.
