One inmate was shot dead by a homeowner and another escapee was captured soon after the pair engineered an ill-fated, early-morning prison break Tuesday from a facility in South Carolina, officials said.
The Pickens County Sheriff's Office told FOX Carolina the two inmates escaped around 2:40 a.m. from the Pickens County Prison, located about 25 miles west of Greenville.

“One inmate was shot dead by a homeowner...”
A feelgood story if I’ve ever heard one.
Only better ending would have been both shot. Now the taxpayers have to pay for another trial for the still living escapee.
Funerals are cheaper.
Ping
When I worked for the state prison system here in Georgia, the locals looked forward to inmates escaping.
Fortunately for the inmates, none of them tried to escape from the prison.
We did have a few go from the chain gangs, but, only two got shot that I know of, and, that was before I started working for them. The rest either almost drowned, or, were picked up trying to use Momma’s credit card.
South Carolina’s gun ownership rate is 44.4 percent.
SC also has the Castle Doctrine which allows a property owner to use deadly force to repel an uninvited intruder who enters his domain.
Not a great state to do home invasions or car jackings.
Glad I live here.
In 1954 there was a riot at the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City. When word got out, local citizens ringed the prison walls with hunting rifles and shotguns waiting for any inmates who tried to escape.
While looking up info to verify the date I came across an article about a man and woman who were executed together about a year earlier. They had kidnapped and killed a child. They were sentenced in November and executed the next month. Justice used to be somewhat swifter back then. To be fair there was absolutely no doubt as to their guilt.
Indeed. Nowadays, many killers live longer on Death Row than their victims lived on Planet Earth.
South Carolina...where winter comes late and leaves early.
SC is high on my list if I ever leave Virginia.
Floriduh not so much.
Us South Carolinians don't fool around.

worked at a prison Chino CA surrounded by dairies and farms. We told the inmates (mostly from LA) the farmers would should them if they escaped. The insurance com apneas were telling the framers, leave your keys in the car. Let them have your keys not your family’s lives.
"She came out on the good end and the other guy, the bad guy, didn't," the sheriff said. He added the incident served as an example for why other women should consider getting a CPW*.
In the sheriff's defense, I think he was talking about the class you have to take and pass to get a CWP. That's good knowledge for anyone who owns a gun.
* I think Fox News is confused. The initials are CWP: Concealed Weapon Permit.
Yes the Bobby Greenlease case in the KC area I think.
Coroner releases name of escaped inmate shot dead after breaking into Pickens Co. woman’s home; 2nd escaped inmate back in custody
> South Carolinas gun ownership rate is 44.4 percent
Real rate is probably closer to 80%. If I had to guess, I’d say this state averages three firearms per house.
Yes the Bobby Greenlease case in the KC area I think.

Seems that meth and neck/face tattoos go together.
I moved to SC from the deep blue state of Ct five years ago. Best thing I ever did. I love it here.
Give SC a look. Great place to retire.

Been to SC MANY times. A friend of mine moved there some years ago taking his young family. He has been in heaven since he got there.
