This has been done for other presidents; here’s an article from 1994, when President Clinton declared a National Day of Mourning for Richard Nixon:
I don’t understand all the vitriol over this. I’m glad that we maintain these traditions, regardless of who the individual men honored may have come to be seen - even in the eyes of those who once supported them.
The traditions honor and reflect respect for our system and offices, and for service.
It’s one day to honor a man who gave great service to his nation. It seems very small, in this moment, to think of it otherwise.

Yep nothing new but does make for a good read thread.
Huh? HW Bush nearly destroyed this nation.
Between his pro abortion attitude, his father’s financing of Planned Parenthood and his son’s continued funding of it for EIGHT straight years... that is a lot of innocent blood shed on the part of the Bushes.
What’s the tally now? 100 million dead American babies?
I’m sure it’s hot in there, George. Sorry you didn’t do the manly and Christian thing and repent publicly.
I totally agree.
President Bush was not so much a great man, but he had great moments, and he played a significant role throughout much of our nation’s history.
He was the youngest naval aviator when he joined in WWII, carried out many missions, and his plane was was shot down in flames.
Two of his crewmen died but he survived, and while floating in the water he was strafed by a Japanese fighter plane and then rescued by a sub.
He went on to establish a career in oil and held numerous major government positions, including the highest office in our land.
I, for one...am glad we are pausing to honor his memory.
I also agree with the post office closing, as it did for Reagan, Ford and others. We ship dozens of packages every day during the Christmas season and this closing will hurt us, but I respect the fact that we are pausing as a nation to honor George Herbert Walker Bush.
Even though conservatives had much to disagree with him about, he could be considered a giant by his numerous pivotal roles throughout our country’s modern era.
