Yes. All I think is that there will still be very strong internal pressures against people driving around in importer American cars We will see - maybe these influences may abate in time

“I don’t think the Chinese are that ‘impressed’ with US autos.”

That’s OK. That’s what markets are good at - sorting out consumer preferences. Less preferred products should fail.

What should not be happening is that central governments like China should not be putting up trade barriers against us - if they do, we have to offset them with tariffs on their products.

If they beat us in a fair fight - that’s as it should be.

They love some of them. The U.S. exports six times the number of vehicles to China as it imports from China. GM is the #1 foreign market share holder in China and Buick is always one of the top 3 selling brands. Most of the vehicles sold in China are made there, that’s true. But China does import a number. Some of the best selling U.S. models imported into China include the Ford Mustang, Ford Explorer, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Cherokee, Lincoln Navigator, Lincoln Continental, Lincoln MKC, Chevrolet Camaro, Tesla S. They also import several BMW, Mercedes, and Toyota models made in U.S. plants.

We have never had “free trade”, state managed trade is the opposite of free trade - the product of Market forces.

Trump has repeatedly reminded us that nations should move towards free trade to maximize economic activity. Tariffs are a POLITICAL tool to move toward free trade like the President says.

Tariffs work all right, work to reduce economic activity just like every other tax. They are useful as a political tool to help dismantle artificial (generally political) constraints to market forces such as those China indulges in.

People seem to not understand what free trade actually is and believe it is something other than a goal- a goal never achieved. Another failure is to understand that trade as we have known it is controlled by government policies not the market. These lower economic growth across the board.

With actual free trade the United States economy would kick ass and take names.

There is no reason to challenge the ECONOMIC impact of tariffs because they work POLITICALLY.

This Never Never-Trumper has never claimed they do not lead to changes or are without benefits for some parts of the economy.

All taxes lower economic activity. You ignore this and all other negative costs of tariffs. It is impossible to return to 1860 and fund a government and military the size of ours.

All taxes lower economic activity.

Import tariffs are different they stimulate domestic economic activity and reduce foreign economic activity. win - win for us!

Tariffs also repress economic activity. That is what I am saying: you do not recognize any negative economic impacts of tariffs.

Look at our railroad building in the 1800s, it was much more expensive and took longer because of tariff on Iron. It clearly benefited the iron industry but it hurt many others.

A tariff is a political tool and a disguised tax on all who are not the specific beneficiaries of the protection.

Trump has made it clear that a tariff is a step along the road to real free trade, it is not an end in itself because of it’s economic benefits. It is a POLITICAL tool which can be used to bludgeon other nations towards free trade.

That is rich. You won't recognize one benefits of tariffs which are many.

It clearly benefited the iron industry but it hurt many others.

It also benefited the small business and families that the steel industry supported. It also keeps the technology inside the USA. It's how you GROW an economy. THINK LONG TERM YOU RETARD.

Global free trade is as discredited as communism as far as ideals go.

And it is defended with every bit the same vehemence by those stupid enough to adhere to it.

Once the idiotic insults starts the discussion is over.

Without the insults I enjoy addressing the issues you raise since there is occasionally one which is not just incorrect conventional knowledge.

As to your last remark about the small businesses and workers who depended upon the Iron industry, it is just as persuasive to claim that by slowing down the railroad expansion the tariff hurt the small businesses and workers who depended on the railroad.

At first glance I would hold this to be a negative since railroad workers were highly paid relative to Iron industry workers. So there was a net loss of income.

First you'd have to prove that using domestically produced raised SLOWED down the process. An the month(s) that it cost the project the delay benefited the country at large and was a bigger economic benefit. Regardless, in the LONG term having a vibrant steel industry is essential. I find economic retarded people can only think short term.

Like I said your ego will require you to respond....
