Measles cases worldwide jumped more than 30 percent last year compared to 2016, with increases recorded in wealthy European countries like Germany where vaccination coverage has historically been high, the UN said Thursday.

The World Health Organization said the worrying trend of resurgent measles cases was a near global phenomenon, but the causes varied among regions.

My comment:

Globally, the WHO states there were 173,000 cases of measles in 2017. The article makes no mention of how many of those 173,000 cases were people already vaccinated, but the WHO does claim that the global vaccine coverage for measles is at 85%. Taking that percentage and applying it to the 173,000 reported cases, that would mean app. 147,000 of the people in question would have been vaccinated.

With app. 7,000,000,000 (billion) people on the planet, the reported cases of measles in 2017 represents a risk of 0.00002471 or -10 to the 5th power per person (173,000 divided by 7,000,000,000). Keep in mind, according to the article, this miniscule number was 30% less in 2016!

Important to note is that there is no discussion of the condition of the 173,000 people infected. Did any die or were their symptoms mild?

I wonder what percentage of these measles cases were migrants or were exposed to migrants.

Your assumption that the 85% figure applies to the 173,000 cases is completely unwarranted unless you have information that does not appear in the article.

Could be.

What % of the 173,000 cases would you think were vaccinated?

Concur - the likelihood is that a high percentage of those with the disease were not vaccinated while a small percentage vaccinated may have contracted the disease. There is always the possibility of an ineffective inoculation.

Don't know but the article does mention a rise in Germany & other European nations where a vaccination schedule is common.

Jenny is cute but she has nothing to do with the data behind the alarmist headline.

Bingo! What good does having a "High Rate of Vaccinations" do for you when invaded by the hordes from the South?

REASONS FOR ILLEGAL INSTEAD OF LEGAL IMMIGRATION
1- These Central American caravan members mainly want to have benefits of living in this country: which is not asylum requests
2- The caravan individuals said they will cross illegally without applying for asylum
3- .Perhaps illegal entrance to U.S is based on being legally inadmissible: One-third of migrants in caravan are being treated for health issues, Tijuana health official says: https://www.foxnews.com/…/caravan-migrants-suffer-from-resp…;

INFORMATION:
Anyone applying to visit or reside in U.S., whether on a temporary visa or a permanent green card, must prove that he or she does not present a health risk to the general public. These requirements are known as health-related grounds of inadmissibility.

You might not be allowed to enter or remain in the United States if you:
• have a communicable disease of public health significance
• lack required vaccinations
• have or have had a physical or mental disorder that causes you to engage in behavior that might be harmful to yourself or others, or
• have a history of drug abuse or addiction.

Even if you have never been diagnosed with an alcohol- or drug-related health issue, a record of alcohol- or drug-related arrests (a DUI, for instance) or criminal offenses can result in your being found inadmissible on health grounds.

No idea to be honest but is would expect that the percentage vaccinated would be quite low because it seems to be a pretty effective vaccine.

Measles responds well to a healthy immmune system. Right now you should be eating vitamin a and c foods and sometimes supplementing c. No need to supplement A, difficult to do, but if you got measles you should. Also, curcumin should be taken in food or supplement daily (supplement should also contain piperine or you’ve wasted your $).

Measles needn’t be feared and getting it as a child may prevent worse things.

Change the headline to say influenza instead. Same numbers, you all accept them and don’t panic. Viruses abound. Be as prepared as possible. Even vaccines don’t last forever. Just have the healthiest body you can, and your case, if you even get one, will be on the milder side.

The odds of either you or your family getting the measles are in the realm of hitting the powerball so come on out of your bunker and join the living 😀

I can only assume since the 173,000 cases are from the general global population, the 85% vaccine coverage is applicable.
