How can they be so sure he committed suicide?

Yup. My step grand-daughter (don’t ask) had her boyfriend 9mm himself in front of her last year. She’s still working through it. His kids weren’t there luckily. Had a good friend do himself in in front of his wife not long ago. She seems to be handling it pretty well from what we can tell. Everybody handles it differently but, selfish act? Damn right it is.

“I’m extremely suspicious of people like this.”

That’s classic obituary talk——usually meaningless.

My step granddaughter had to clean up her father’s mess—there was blood and a few days delay in finding the body. She was 18 or 19 when it happened. She has gone out of her way to spare my wife, his mother, the details. Her father’s suicide was not a surprise but I doubt she’ll ever get the images out of her mind.

Good thing he didn’t disconnect the student, too. That’s one student who will never jump again. Way to ruin the experience.

At least he didn’t take the student with him.

True, it it was certainly unnecessarily exhibitionist.

Many people would be traumatized just watching it. The guy could just as well have done it alone instead of bringing a passenger along.

Unless, of course, the passenger inspired it.

I’m a former Instructor/Jumpmaster, an old one at that.

I think the only way he can detach himself from the student is to release the leg straps so he falls through the harness, leaving the rest of the rig with the student. Since the student is attached to the jump master’s harness, he couldn’t detach the student.

But leaving that student with a ram air canopy is not a pleasant thought. People have been killed on some landings because they flared too high or hook turned too low.

Not the first time, won’t be the last. Some people are willing to pay the price to get that ultimate rush.
