Such were the dramatic minutes when KNM "Helge Ingstad" crashed in "Sola TS"

Radar images and the audio log show that the frigate KNM "Helge Ingstad" kept high speed and steered towards the tanker "Sola TS", despite repeated warnings that they were going to collide.

At 04.02 Thursday morning it goes wrong outside Stureterminalen in Hjeltefjorden. At around 17 knots the frigate KNM "Helge Ingstad" straight into the front of the 250 meter long tanker "Sola TS". Before the collision was a fact, the heavily loaded tanker asked the warship to swing away repeatedly.

It shows the radar signals and the audio log VG has gained access to.

The consequence is that the warship of almost four billion dollars lies with a strong battlefield in a shallow area just outside the country. Everything indicates that the warship had turned off the AIS, which is the automatic tracking system. Nevertheless, the radar images show that the frigate was well visible to the ships around.

NATO has confirmed that the frigate operated navigation training when the collision occurred. In the image series below you can see the radar from the area before and after the accident. The red figure that moves from the top left corner should be "Helge Ingstad".

Fedje VTS is the guard center responsible for the ships in the heavily trafficked fjord. Three minutes before it smells, "Sola TS" asks the watch center about which ship will enter the fjord. Just over ten seconds later they respond:

"No, it's an eh. I have not received any information about it. It has not reported to me. I just see it appear on the screen here, "says Fedje VTS over ship radio.

«No information about it, no. No. No, okey, "answers the tanker before it goes on the radio for 43 seconds.

It is only now that the radar images of Fedje VTS show the speed of the unknown ship. They see that it moves in 17 knots. At the same time, "Sola TS" has come up to 7 knots. They are on a collision course.

The tanker asks for information about the unknown ship that comes straight to them. The central station answers: "It is possible that it is" Helge Ingstad ". He came in from the north for a while. It is possible that he is coming there. "

It is now one and a half minutes for the two ships to collide.

NB: In this case, VG has written that there is a person on the tanker Sola TS who comes with the statements: "Helge Ingstad, you have to do something. You start to approach you very much! "And the warning" Helge, Ingstad, turn ". In the end, an anonymous source has sown a doubt about this to TV2 . The source believes it is the Coastal Power Station on Fedje that comes with the statements. VG has contacted the Coastal Administration, the Armed Forces, the police and the Harbor Commission, but they will neither confirm nor declare that this is correct.

Mass evacuation after collision between frigate KNM Helge Ingstad and tanker boat

A dramatic minute Without being sure if it's the frigate that comes against them, ask "Sola TS" if it's "Helge Ingstad" that comes against them. This confirms the warship five seconds later.

First contact between the ships is created, one minute before it smells.

Immediately after, the tanker says to the frigate that comes against them in 17 knots: "Take a starboard right away."

The answer from the frigate is: "Then we go too close to the bowls"

"Swing starboard, if it's you coming. So you have ... "," Sola TS "answers right after.

It will be so quiet over the radio for seven seconds before the next message comes from the warship: "I have a few degrees starboard when we have passed eh, eh, starboard".

The tanker repeats the message a few seconds later: "Helge Ingstad, you have to do something. You start to approach you very much. "

The message is followed by 15 new seconds with silence on the radio.

The next message about the connection is: "Helge Ingstad! Turn! ". Three seconds later, the same voice says: "There will be a collision here then."

It will take 15 seconds before the next message comes from "Sola TS".

"It can be a warship. I hit it ", it's quiet from the radio.

HULL: The tanker "Sola TS" has marked damage to the anchor cluster on the starboard side (left side of the picture) and a hole in the skid side just behind, after the collision with KNM "Helge Ingstad". Otherwise, the tanker was relatively undamaged from the collision.HULL: The tanker "Sola TS" has marked damage to the anchor cluster on the starboard side (left side of the picture) and a hole in the skid side just behind, after the collision with KNM "Helge Ingstad". The contact with "Helge Ingstad" will be sporadic after this, and it sounds sober from the frigate alarms. "We have turned an alarm. Trying to get control of the situation, "they say to the Central Station, confirming that they were colliding with the tanker.

"Okay. Give me status as soon as possible, "replies the alert center.

Meanwhile, frigate moves towards land in five knots. Seven minutes after the crash there is a new person who has taken over the radio to KNM "Helge Ingstad":

"We have a situation. We have gone to an unknown object. We have no progress. "

The central station says: "Helge Ingstad has no progress. They've been in a collision with "Sola TS", I understand. They drive towards land without propulsion. Have you gone wrong? "Right after," Helge Ingstad "replies:" It's still a bit resolved from my side, but we need immediate assistance. "

The subway "Ajax" is sent immediately from the Stureterminal. The submarine goes out to the accident, but says they are having trouble finding the ship. At the same time, "Helge Ingstad" illuminates the radio about new issues: "We have gone through, we need immediate assistance"

The Taax "Tenax" report to VTS that they could look right into the machine room of KNM "Helge Ingstad" after the collision:

"There was some bright light from the engine room. There is a hole right into the engine room ».

EVACUATION: All who were on board the KNM "Helge Ingstad" were evacuated. Successful evacuation In the minutes after the collision, more boats will flow, and the entire "Helge Ingstad" crew of 137 people will be evacuated in the morning hours Thursday. Eight were more easily injured, and two of them were sent to Haukeland University Hospital.

The consequences for the tanker were not great: "There is nothing special here. We go forward and check the bow, then. Then we stopped here, "they told the radio to the central station.

Marius woke up with a big bang: - Thought the worst case! - Unrealistic

Per Odman Jørgensen, mate on board the ship Pinoeer Knutsen - a ship about half an hour from where the accident occurred, told VG that he heard all the communication between "Sola TS" and "Helge Ingstad". He is presented with the contents of the audio log VG has gained access to.

- Does it sound familiar?

- Yes it does. It's just the way I remember it. I heard it from the very beginning. I can confirm that, "says Jørgensen to VG.

The mate said he thought the communication was part of the NATO exercise Trident Juncture.

"It simply sounded so unrealistic.

- Why?

- When "Sola TS" said, "turn", "you're too close", "you have to do something" and nothing was done, it sounded completely wrong. I thought it had to be an exercise, because the communication was simply wrong.

The Danish officer, who has more than 15 years of experience on board ships along the Norwegian coast, says he did not understand that it had actually been an accident before his ship passed the accident "Helge Ingstad" about half an hour after the collision.

Here the boat gets a heavy stroke

Will not comment Fedje VTS is subject to the Coastal Administration. They respond that all information relating to the course of events has been handed over to the police in Bergen and the Accident Investigation Board.

"Formally, the police have seized our information, and therefore we can not comment on conditions related to communication before the accident," says the regional director of the Coastal Regional Office in the west, John Erik Hagen.

- Are you talking about audio files and digital videology of the sailing?

- This material has been handed over to the police and the accident commission, Hagen answers.

VG has checked the AIS tracking against the radar images, and they show the same movements for the ships in the area.

After what the VG knows, KNM "Helge Ingstad" has announced its arrival just after the book of the Maritime Traffic Center Fedje VTS. This is the inspection body that will keep track of the shipping traffic in the area.

VG has informed the Armed Forces that the newspaper has sound logs and radar images from the accident. They do not want to comment on this.

"[Three minutes before it smells] Must be the translation."

Klingon is a tricky language even for native speakers; too many consonants, not enough vowels.

No kidding. That was a difficult read. In at least 20 places it seems.

If the communications were that complicated (which I doubt) no wonder they collided.

Sure sounds like the warship was being operated by novices at 4 in the morning. At least that’s how it reads to me. I’m surprised they didn’t kill anyone.

And three minutes after it smells, I think the frigate radioed “All your base are belong to us.”

Nice translation. Did someone run this article through Babblefish or something?

Hey, if you’re unsure about where you’re going, by all means, proceed at 17 knots.

I appreciate a frigate can possibly go maybe just shy of 3x that fast full out, but 17 knots isn’t “slow”, by any means.

> I think the frigate radioed “All your base are belong to us.” <

And at first the tanker captain thought he was under attack. So right after the collision he radioed “Somebody set up us the bomb.”

According to what I can find, our new LCS/Frigates can do about 46 knots.

Since this accident resembles two others in the recent past, it is almost as if the WOMEN of the world have decided that the way to end war is to crash all the ships.

Could be, but my guess is that they were all looking at Facebook on their cell phones.

Found a UPI story of the same incident and got some answers.

Royal Norwegian Navy frigate struck a Maltan crude oil tanker in a heavily traveled fjord.

No one injured, no oil was spilled, but the frigate's captain had to beach her to avoid sinking
