If you look at a controversy as a balance, and the decision as reflecting the side that presents the arguments with the most logical weight, then you can see liberal reactions like this:

Side 1 presents an argument. Backs it up with facts. That tips the balance in their favor.

Side 2 (the liberal side) has two options: A) it can rebut Side 1 with counter-facts and reasoned argument, putting its own weights on the balance. Or B) it can knock the weights off Side 1's pan, restoring the balance to a neutral state, but not illuminating anything or advancing any knowledge of the subject.
