Is there a difference in legal consequences between such a situation involving law enforcement versus military?

If you’re military, you do time in Leavenworth.

If you’re civil law enforcement, with a few exceptions, you get paid time off during the “investigation”, then you’re back to work.

Depends on the rules of engagement for military. So in some cases no, some yes.

LEO in America seem to have less restrictive rules of engagement than military in war zones.
