Eighty-five people have been arrested as thousands of demonstrators occupied five bridges in central London to voice their concern over the looming climate crisis.
Protesters, including families and pensioners, began massing on five of Londons main bridges from 10am on Saturday. An hour later, all the crossings had been blocked in one of the biggest acts of peaceful civil disobedience in the UK in decades. Some people locked themselves together, while others linked arms and sang songs.
By 2pm the blockade of Southwark Bridge had been abandoned and protesters moved from there to Blackfriars Bridge, where organisers said they were soon to move west towards Westminster Bridge.
Demonstrators occupied Southwark, Blackfriars, Waterloo, Westminster and Lambeth bridges.
The Metropolitan police said all the bridges had since reopened
and that most of the arrests had been for obstruction under the Highways Act.
Afterwards, demonstrators gathered in Parliament Square to hear speeches. Roger Hallam, one of the strategists behind the actions, told the Guardian he felt the protest had been fantastic.
This is total prediction stuff, mass participation civil disobedience, he said. They cant do anything about it unless they start shooting people, and presumably they wont do that.
The day was due to end with an interfaith ceremony outside Westminster Abbey.
The move is part of a campaign of mass civil disobedience organised by a new group, Extinction Rebellion, which wants to force governments to treat the threats of climate breakdown and extinction as a crisis.
The social contract has been broken
[and] it is therefore not only our right but our moral duty to bypass the governments inaction and flagrant dereliction of duty and to rebel to defend life itself, said Gail Bradbrook, one of the organisers.

Were they falling down?
Arrested means a badge of honor to a liberal. Toss their sorry butts off the bridge for a real effect.
The biggest international con of all time.
I hope the coming Ice Age hits sooner rather than later, and that these AGW idiots are alive to see the Thames freeze solid.
The arrests are for show. The government wants them terrified of the weather, to take their minds away from the real danger. Government.
Good.
Lock them up and throw away the key.
They interfered with the many people who needed to use those bridges.
Too late to protest the looming stupidity crisis. It’s here in full battle gear.
Besides Government I would also add..Islam. - Tom
They’re protesting the climate?
Theyre protesting the climate?
Psst the climate don’t care......
Until they start hitting peoples pocket books as well it’s never going to stop.....But then the world is suppose to apparently be in chaos when the man of the hour steps up with all the answers....mixing cultures is and will do that effortlessly. Just ask any prisoner in federal prisons.
[Theyre protesting the climate?]
Shoot, when it’s really cold and icing, I’m protesting the climate, too.
I’ve yet to win a battle with the climate. I’ll next try sending money to the Paris Accords.
Theyre protesting the climate?
ya ,they want one ,LOL
Just wait until they see that orange ball in the sky.....
The funny thing is were entering a very cold period
can arrest and imprison for no, permit
Delusional sheeple... They will believe in anything that some other fool tells them. Anybody who spends more than 5 minutes investigating the climate change cult can come to the conclusion that it’s pure bunk. Soothsaying predictions of the end of the world have been around as long as mankind... And that’s the key ingredient to any religion or cult. They know how the world ends and if you give them money, you can either get a ticket to that ending or avoid it in some fashion. Al Gore’s religion is no different.
Fools in their own paradise. Climate fanatics are idiots one and all.
