Upon landing in France over the weekend, Trump called Macron’s remarks about defending against America “insulting.” The President tweeted that instead of figuring out a way to fight the U.S., the Europeans should pay their share of NATO’s budget, which the U.S. has been underwriting.
Macron’s anti-Americanism isn’t only fueled by domestic political concerns. He has two other – perhaps even more significant – causes for his hostility.
First, and most fundamentally, Macron rightly views Trump’s presidency and his nationalist vision of America as an existential threat to the European Union. As political philosopher Yoram Hazony explains in his vital book, The Virtue of Nationalism, (Basic Books 2018), globalism, the foundational rationale of the European Union, is in essence an imperialist project.
Like its ideological twin and sometimes competitor in the U.S. — namely, American internationalism or liberal internationalism — the EU is predicated on the idea that nations should be shorn of their power to determine and advance their national interests in accordance with the values and needs of their people.
In the neo-imperialist models advanced by the EU and by American internationalists, national powers should be transferred to international, transnational, or supranational bodies.

The final reason that Macron believes his interests are served by picking a fight with Trump is because he is trying to position himself as the heir to outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s leadership of the EU.
Since taking office, Macron has repeatedly shown that his view of leadership has little to do with actual accomplishments. As France’s economy dribbles along with recession-like growth rates, and the French people express deep seated pessimism about their future, Macron entertains them with stunts and photo-ops.

What’s the difference between nationalism and national sovereignty
When the UN was founded in 1941, there were 51 nations. Today, there are 193 nation state members. Nationalism is the trend, not globalism. There are scores of separatist movements throughout the world, including in Europe. The EU is unraveling. Macron and the rest of the globalists are on the wrong side of history.
He thinks he’s DeGaul reincarnated.

Macron was a Rothschild financial guy who was hand picked to beat Marie Le Pen in the last election by the globalists. In a way, he is their last chance at salvaging what is left of the EU.

Macron’s nationalism protestation in the EU is similar to the states rights arguments in America. Trump is arguing for nationalist America in competition with the EU, GCC and China.
Trump is putting America first. Forcing the Euro nations to cough up money and wherewithall for their own defense is a bitter pill. An amalgmation of the Euro military absent the American glue is unlikely

I strongly suspect any “European Army” would NOT be focused on protecting Europe from any actual external threat (like Russia). Instead, its main purpose would be ushering in Third World migrants as they make their way to Europe. And ensuring their safety (against any resistance from the native population) once they are there.
I know your question is rhetorical, but as a short answer I would just say that nationalism = loyalty and devotion to a nation, and that preservation of national sovereignty is an important part of what that loyalty and devotion support.
I think it's kind of ironic that the President of a nation that won the soccer/football World Cup recently, a competition based on national teams competing against each other - and at which national flags and national pride are on clear display, is bashing nationalism.
For me, it's really important to not let the left define the narrative. Loving one’s nation, and being loyal to the preservation of that nation does not mean that you don't care about anyone else in the world. They aren't in any way mutually exclusive - which we demonstrated twice in the last century while saving France. France should also not forget that it was their involvement in Vietnam (French Indochina) that contributed to our involvement and the deaths of all our young men and women who died in that war.
If the Yurps are so concerned about their security, they can show everybody this by spending the paltry 2% of GDP on Defense that they agreed to do years ago.

The Yurp elites including Macron espouse anything but states rights. It’s the exact opposite. They want to centralize power by stripping nation states of their sovereign rights.
Those who argue for states rights in America want more decentralized power and want the federal government to return power to the states it has steadily usurped over the last 150 years.

Macron has thrown his country open to the muslim hordes and relinquished sovereignty to the globalists in Brussels.
He resents the fact that President Trump won’t validate his idiocy by following suite.
President Trump saying he will protect our national sovereignty is a slap in the face to France
who has thrown their own sovereignty away with barely a whimper.
I think that's the exact reason Macron chose to use the word "patriotism" in his rant against nationalism.
Trump's nationalism is a stark reminder that he (Macron) is selling out his country.
As an aside, his redefining "patriotism" as being true to values as opposed to country is another postmodern slight of hand. Just another attempt of a Leftie to try to control the language.
