The other part of this whole mess is what it’s doing to residential fire insurance rates. I just switched insurance companies after 35 years because my current insurer was implementing “a brush clause” on my policy resulting in a 15% increase this coming year that was coupled with a 15% increase last year. All of it is really to try and recoup the losses that they’ve suffered with the fires in the past couple of years.
The other thing that’s happened is that as the suburban areas have grown, homeowners have turned areas that were primarily grassland into areas with lots and lots of trees, with many non-native species that now constitute fire hazards.
The Berkeley Hills fire (about 3,000 structures) years ago was fueled by Eucalyptus trees which were originally brought to the area from Australia probably a century ago. They burn like stink because they have oily leaves. Pogo was right!
