Philly could use him today. I can damn well guarantee that if Rizzo were mayor Philly would NOT be a sanctuary city.

Here's a mural of Frank Rizzo painted on the side of one of the stores in the 9th Street Italian Market, a few years after he died. Naturally, it has been defaced and protested in the years since, but was a long-time landmark. That's the St. Paul's Roman Catholic church on Christian Street in the upper left of the photo. I remember meeting Mayor Rizzo while having lunch with a client in one of the famous restaurants in Philly's Italian Market, Palumbo's Nostalgia, its walls lined with autographed photos of Sinatra, Dean Martin, many Italian-American singers from the 50s-70s, pictured with Frank Palumbo. (It's said all South Philly women loved "the three Franks"Sinatra, Rizzo and Palumbo). Mayor Rizzo loved to have lunch there at Nostalgia (and I loved their clams and linguine and their Sarcone's sesame seed Italian bread), and after eating, he made a habit of going from table to table and shaking peoples' hands, whether he knew them or not. Love him or hate him, he was a very effective mayor in many ways.

I couldn’t stand his democrat, corrupt ass back then but he’d probably be good for the city now. Ahh Palumbos. Wonderful place.

I was so not into politics then, and had no memory of what party he was with. He seemed to make the office his own, though, like Trump, regardless of party. The main thing I remember is his being criticized for police brutality, especially with regard to race. I'm not in a position to evaluate whether this was true or whether it was like the squabbles we have now when armed criminals are apprehended or shot by police but their families act like they were misunderstood on their way to choir practice after a scout meeting. I do remember that there was at least an illusion of safety walking around, and also his amusing "tell it like it is" comments, like when they installed that terrible piece of public art in front of the Municipal Services Building and he said, "It looks like a bunch of Italian plasterers dropped a load of plaster." Can you imagine the pc reaction today? At the time, it was a giant laugh, especially among the South Philly Italian-Americans.
