As cars clogged the parking lot outside Highlands Public Library, Tony Maxwell was certain his state was on the cusp of electing Floridas first black governor. Its nice to see black people doing something early, said Maxwell, 53, an African American retired naval officer, voting two days before Election Day. Gillums candidacy elicited an excitement on Jacksonvilles predominantly black north side that was unseen since the election of Barack Obama as president.
When we vote, we win, was one of Gillums trademark phrases, and Maxwell and his friends believed it.
They voted. Still, their candidate lost.
Democrats in Florida and Georgia awoke Wednesday feeling a complicated mix of emotions after two rising black political stars and would-be governors appeared to fall painfully short of victory.
That pain was even more acute in African American communities, which sought to show how powerful they could be as a voting bloc in a divisive political period. There was deep disappointment, of course, and in some cases defiance and anger, over racist attacks that targeted both candidates, and, at times, hope that perhaps important lessons were learned for future candidacies.

Yes, black candidates should always win.
Otherwise, I am victim.
Because 13% deserves everything they want, boo hoo...
Uh....voting as a racist bloc is divisive!
Yet the “racism” is always with the blacks as victims
Never mind the inherent yet obvious racism of blacks voting for blacks, no matter how illegal the candidate or as unqualified or evil
See Abrams, Gillum and Obama for examples
It can’t possibly be that both lost because they were stone cold socialist liberals. Naw, it’s racism.
I’m glad to see you’re checking your White privilege...
My take-away from the article: There was some communist black guy serving as a naval officer in our armed forces.
How come the black republican in Michigan lost? The guy with the fist 2 names John James.
My take away was that the naval officer wasn’t very impressed with his people and their motivation.
Its nice to see black people doing something early”
Florida and Georgia governors races are not over. Votes will be manufactured, recounted, .... you know the drill.
They are making ballots as I write this so don’t be glum black guys you will win it is guaranteed.
If you vote in a Communist black person how does that help black people?
Maybe some of those early black voters voted for the white guy.
So what about John James, WaPoo?
It should prompt soul searching for white people.
Have they no sense of self-preservation in the face of a candidate who is clearly biased against them?
Here's some "soul-searching" for y'all ...
What this means is that it's impossible for black candidates to win ANY statewide election in the U.S. unless a lot of WHITE people vote for them.
I cried myself to sleep because Beto lost and were both Irish. Plus, hes sorta pretend hispanic and my wifes Italian, which is also sorta pretend Hispanic, so she was devastated as well. Were asking a lot of questions or something.
Because the racists in the Dem party expect every black voter to vote for a candidate just because the candidate is black?
