New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof blamed the NRA for the Thousand Oaks, California, shooting at the Borderline Bar and Grill but ignored the litany of California gun control laws that failed to prevent the attack. The opening two paragraphs of Kristofs column set the stage:
Another needless tragedy in America: This time a gunman opened fire in a bar in Thousand Oaks, Calif., killing at least 12 people and injuring many more.
These horrors happen far more often in America than in other advanced countries partly because of the outsize political influence of the National Rifle Association. N.R.A. candidates suffered some important defeats in Tuesdays midterm elections, but in a broad swath of red state America it remains potent, controlling politicians who know that an N.R.A. endorsement can make or break an election.
He continues, discussing how the NRA, through gun magazines, spurs its members zealotry. He says the NRA mobilizes its supporters with magazine covers emblazoned with photos of gun controllers like former President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Then, toward the end of his article, he returns to the shooting in California to say, One of the reasons the United States has so many gun deaths is the N.R.A. and its extremist defense of handgun ownership, almost without limit.
Kristof avoids mentioning that the Thousands Oaks attacker used a legally purchased handgun. That means he complied with all of the lefts gun controls to get it.

Right on que!
Blame the NRA. Say what? It doesnt own California Democrat politicians.
Lets see, 200+ people, all disarmed, versus one armed person. Shame on the state for not letting citizens arm and defend themselves,, shame on the location for insufficient security. Was no one on site armed? 200+ people waiting to be killed. And blaming NRA, Very sad.
Go and reproduce asexually, Kristof.

there were 6 off duty police officers in the club at the time, apparently unarmed or acting as lookouts. Ventura County is also a Shall Issue county, if you have a pulse and no record, you qualify for a ccw permit.
Generally not correct, as shown by the research done by John Lott.
The reason they seem to be happening more often is because of the copycat effect, which is known by, and promoted by the media.
The people who are supposed to enforce the rules just don’t do their jobs. Then when the measures they were hired to enforce “don’t work,” they cry out against their political enemies.
What a great gig. Get paid, don’t do your job, and you are “down with the struggle.”
And the whole thing is too complex for the soccer moms to understand, so nothing will be done about it. Dream job!
So, why disarmed? What good is that? Hall monitors eyeing the college coeds?

They were there for the entertainment-—and most likely a few drinks. In other words, they were just customers.
.
The NRA does not sell arms. Planned Parenthood does.
Mr. Hawkins does a great job of listing the gun restrictions in CA. But doesn’t CA have some ridiculous regulations on the max number of rounds a mag can hold? Or maybe that’s some other state.
Glad I live in South Carolina.
Come and take them, Nicky boy!
Touche!
The guy was already recognized as running off the rails, but nothing, NOTHING, was done in a timely and proactive manner.
This did not come out of the blue, and it had nothing to do with either the NRA or the enforcement of existing gun laws, in California or anywhere else.
This is a failure to adequate respond to increasingly erratic behavior, and that falls upon the local authorities, to whom this person was known and had a history, and to family and neighbors, who were well aware of the progression of the derangement that led to this fury and chaos.
Thousand Oaks is the third safest city in CA. They probably couldn’t think that something like that would happen there. Pride is a terrible sin.
One of the prime motivators for rampage murders like this is eternal fame from the Media.

Two weeks ago, a Crimean student in the Russian controlled areas obtained a permit for a shotgun and murdered 19 of his fellow students. No mention of it was ever made on the evening news.
Nicholas Kristof is right there trying to pick up political points by right-of-way blaming the NRA. Please tell me how the NRA is responsible for this bastard taking a legal gun into the bar and killing people.
