You can thank lawyers, civilian review boards and liberal politicians for that. If one of these guys got involved of a use of deadly force incident off duty, and had a blood draw after and any alcohol showed up, they’d be fired whether or not the shoot was good.

I think cops are supposed always to carry, even off-duty. However, that means that they probably shouldn’t have a drop of alcohol to drink — ever. So, the prudent thing to do if they plan on even having a beer is to leave their guns at home. Otherwise, they’ll be blamed for firing after having drunk alcohol, or NOT firing even though they are carrying. Best to be accused of not carrying their guns off-duty.

Under CA law, they are actually required to be armed at all times in public.
