BROOKLYN, Ohio — A Cleveland boy led police on his second high-speed chase with police in 13 months, this time because his mother took away his PlayStation, police said.
The boy was arrested after the crash and is being housed in the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center. Formal charges have not yet been filed.
The 11-year-old boy stole his mother’s 2013 Dodge Durango about 10:45 p.m. Sunday after they got into an argument about his mother taking away his PlayStation, according to police reports.
The mother went to bed. She later told police that she noticed her keys missing and later got a call from the boy’s father saying he saw the boy driving the SUV on West 117th Street and Memphis Avenue, according to police reports.
The boy’s father chased after the boy and the boy tried to hide by pulling into the former Brooklyn fire station on Memphis Avenue, police reports say.
A Brooklyn police officer noticed someone pulling into the fire station and stopped to see if they needed help, police reports say. The boy immediately sped off, driving the wrong way on Memphis Avenue, blowing through stop lights and weaving in and out of traffic, police reports say.
The officer chased him into Cleveland and the boy turned off the SUV’s lights, according to police. He hit 87 mph on Pearl Road and was driving between 70 and 90 mph throughout the chase, according to police reports.
The officer lost sight of the SUV after about four miles, but another Brooklyn officer got picked up the chase for another two. That officer also lost sight of him, but a Parma Heights officer spotted the SUV and chased it for a short time, police reports say.
Parma Heights police called off the chase. About 25 minutes later, the boy crashed into a parked truck on West Schaaf Road in the Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood.
The SUV flipped over after the crash, police reports say. The boy walked out of the SUV and collapsed, according to police reports. He was taken to MetroHealth, where he was treated for scrapes and cuts to his left hand and wrist. He was later released from the hospital.
The boy told police he wasn’t being chased at the time of the crash and that he crashed because he wasn’t paying attention, police reports say.
The boy suffers from attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder and oppositional defiant disorder, according to police reports. The boy’s mother declined to comment when reached by cleveland.com.
Sunday’s incident marks the second time the boy stole his mom’s car and led police on a lengthy pursuit. The first happened Oct. 26, 2017.
In that case, the boy was waiting for his sister to take him to school when he stole his mother’s car and sped away.
The boy's mother jumped in her car and followed him. She called 911 and told dispatchers she was following her son as he drove on West 117th Street, then on Interstate 90 westbound.
The state patrol picked up the chase when the boy entered I-80. At one point, a trooper pulled up next to the boy and motioned for him to stop. The boy shook his head and sped up, state troopers said at the time.
The boy drove some 100 mph on I-90 through Cuyahoga, Lake and Erie counties, police and state troopers said. Stunned drivers called Westlake police and reported seeing the young boy speeding and his mother tailing him.
The chase ended at 9:49 a.m., about one hour after he took off.
No one was injured in the incident.
He was initially charged in Erie County Juvenile Court, but the case was transferred to Cuyahoga County. Cuyahoga Juvenile Court Judge Denise Rini ruled that the boy was incompetent to stand trial and the charges were dismissed, according to court records.
Two weeks before that, the boy took his mother’s car and sped on Interstate 90 until three of his tires blew out.
The boy told the officers he took his mother’s car because he was bored, police said.
