Do they have the right to do that? I'm surely no expert here but I thought that you could play someone’s performances as long as you paid them some kind of royalty.

If the venue has a general license, I am sure they can play the song for whatever purpose they want to.

Axl Rose's complaint has no merit, and he wrongly assumes the listeners think he is supporting something when his music is played. He has apparently forgotten that he is just an entertainer, and most people listening to his music are more interested in having fun, or sipping a beer, or the girl next to them than him and his band. Even when they paid to go see them live.

Yet another entertainer with an inflated sense of self worth.
