I keep asking myself, “why would the Crown Prince be so sloppy with an execution?”

Doesn’t compute with me ...

Arrogance. Why would it have to be hidden and perfect. Who would hold him or his country responsible for anything? Has that not been the history of Saudi Arabia, especially relating to terrorism and their sponsor of it and wahhabism.

Throw in the fact that 'operations' screw up. Some years ago, 'we' screwed up grabbing a guy in Italy. The cia clowns used their real names, used hotel points, etc. nuts.

I suspect there is some connection to the demonrats. Somehow, somewhere there are dots. Trump promised the wall and suddenly there is a wall of invaders. Trump is bringing back our allies and the world is starting to respect the US again. The dems can’t have that so they may be trying to break down relations hoping Trump will go off on the Saudis. If by chance they didn’t have anything to do with the assassination, they are embracing it and playing it for all it’s worth.

There are too probable potential answers to this:

1) MbS or another highly places Royal family member ordered Mr. Khashoggi killed and simply and grossly misunderstood the impact this would have.

It's one thing for a reporter/columnist to die during a war or civil unrest or have a suspicious "accident," but entirely another for a reporter, who works for a still influential paper (not as much as they were, but for the moment still influential), to be assassinated, in a consulate, in a country that has a beef with the Saudis.

2) The Saudi's wanted to corner and pressure Mr. Khashoggi while he was in their own building, and things got out of hand, and he died. Personally, I think the latter is what occured, Murphy's Law is coming into play and biting the Saudi's hard.

Regardless, this incident has provided Saudi foes plenty of ammunition. Saudi defenders, in contrast only have fig leafs. Khashoggi was no democrat and has much more than casual ties to extremists, but the manner and location of his death, are gifts to Saudi enemies.
