Democratic hopes for a wave election that would carry them to a significant House majority have been tempered in recent weeks amid a shifting political landscape and a torrent of hard-hitting attack ads from Republicans.
Democrats remain favored to win, but GOP leaders believe they can minimize the number of seats they would lose and, perhaps, find a path to preserving their advantage in the chamber.
The tightening, with just over two weeks left, reflects how President Trumps rising approval rating and the polarizing fight over Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh appear to be boosting the partys candidates in a number of conservative and rural districts that have been considered up for grabs.
But Democrats have retained their strength in key suburban areas, where polls show female voters furious with Trump are likely to help flip Republican-held seats.
The past few weeks havent really diminished Democrats chances of a takeover by that much, but theyve increased the chances of a small Democratic majority, said David Wasserman, House editor for the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. He estimated Democrats have a 70 to 75 percent chance of winning the House.
At stake is the fate of the Trump presidency whether Democrats will gain the power to investigate his administration and thwart his agenda, or if emboldened Republicans will fulfill the presidents vision for the nation, from building a border wall to repeal of the Obama-era health-care law.

Looks like the GOP is going to hold the House.
Lets keep Pelosi where she rightfully belongs - in the minority.
Still all need to go out to vote and get others to vote too!
...it’s bad when WAPO indicates trouble......then again it might be a last gasp effort to diminish Republican turn out...
I mean think about it. You're going to see young millennials and a diverse crowd of people speaking. Especially if Antifa shows up.
And trying to put a “good face” on something.
BYTE ME. That's like saying Quinnipiac is "nonpartisan." Allegedly, NPR is "nonpartisan.

Yeah, ok.
No idiot. If the momentum keeps up, the only majority dems will have is they will be the majority of a@@holes i the country.
Fake news media is backpedaling. They need to preserve their credibility.
This was all predicted long ago. It’s advocacy polling until just before the election then they try to say there’s “movement”. No, the only change is with the pollsters trying to maintain credibility.
Favored by whom? The same activists that predicted that Hillary was going to win?

they were hoping for conventional political weather systems to diminish conservative control of congress, but in the age of Trump..
there IS NO CONVENTIONAL wisdom.
Just balls. Testosterone. And serious head butting “to the death” for victory or else.
I do not expect the dems will not go out with a whimper... but with a portion of them driving the dead dem body politic, into convulsions of violence and insurrection that would make the Bolsheviks and Pol Pot blush.
I know but I did not want to suggest a high end wood chipper... in the public forum < / s >
I can only reply to conversation and what I saw voting early; blue wave sank into Red Tide :-)
So as the odds of winning big have crumbled, the odds of winning small have increased. I guess thats oddly correct in the same way the odds of not winning at all have increased. Process of elimination among the possible outcomes.
Neither did I
