In 1787, only the citizenship of the father mattered. The common law was that the wife immediately acquired the citizenship of the husband upon marriage. Congress officially made this law in 1856, If I remember correctly.

Women could not transfer citizenship until after the Cable Act of 1922 was passed. Prior to that, it was always the Husband's citizenship that mattered.
