MISSOULA, Mont. President Trump praised a Republican candidates assault last year on a reporter and fumed over his Democratic opponents here on Thursday night in a freewheeling rally meant to mobilize his bases support in the coming midterm elections.
In urging the crowd to vote for Representative Greg Gianforte, who is running for re-election and who was sentenced to anger management classes and community service for assaulting a reporter last spring, Mr. Trump jokingly warned the crowd to never wrestle him.
I had heard he body-slammed a reporter, Mr. Trump said, noting that he was initially concerned that Mr. Gianforte would lose in a special election last May. I said, Wait a minute. I know Montana pretty well; I think it might help him. And it did.
Anybody that can do a body-slam, the president added, thats my kind of guy.
Mr. Trump made no mention at the rally of Jamal Khashoggi, a dissident Saudi journalist and columnist for The Washington Post, who disappeared this month after visiting the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. United States intelligence officials say Mr. Khashoggi was most likely killed by Saudi officials.
Backlash against the president over his attacks on the news media and over his administrations mild response to allegations that the Saudi government orchestrated the killing has been swift.
The Guardian U.S., which employs the reporter whom Mr. Gianforte body-slammed, issued a statement on Thursday night after Mr. Trump finished speaking.

"I asked Mr Gianforte a question in the same manner I have asked questions of hundreds of politicians: congressmen, senators and even the man who is now our president. Mr Gianfortes response was to slam me to the floor and start punching me. He injured my elbow, broke my glasses and thrust me into a national spotlight I did not seek or desire.
Mr Gianforte then lied in a defamatory public statement in which he insisted his unprovoked physical attack was somehow my fault. Weeks passed, and I then received a written apology from Congressman-elect Gianforte. He accepted his responsibility for his assault and for his defamation. He has acknowledged the importance of the free press and made a thoughtful contribution to protect journalists around the world."
Hit ‘em again.
Harder.
Reads like assault to me. Did the reporter press charges?
Oh, blow it out your candy-assed never-Trumper piehole.
Really ate up the propaganda, didn’t you?
http://www.factfiend.com/that-one-time-evel-knievel-beat-someone-with-a-baseball-bat/
According to Knievel, he had wanted his associate there so that he could very carefully break Saltmans arms you know, to teach him a lesson that lying is wrong via violence, which is never wrong. Saltman and several witnesses countered this by saying that the only reason he had his arm broken by the bat was because hed held it in front of his face to stop Knievel hitting it, witnesses also distinctly heard Knievel saying Im going to kill you while wildly swinging the bat at Saltmans head.
Unsurprisingly after committing a violent assault with a deadly weapon in front of dozens of witnesses while screaming that he was literally trying to kill someone, Knievel was sentenced to 6 months in prison. Saltman on the other hand lost the use of his arm for months, had to endure several excruciating surgeries to correct the damage and had his mother die of a heart attack when she heard hed been attacked.
Saltman later successfully sued Knievel for $13 million, Knievel who famously said that keeping his word was the most important thing in the world, decided not to pay up and died still owing Saltman money for nearly killing him. What a hero.
Trump shoulda brought Linda McMahon with him to help Gianforte promote his candidacy.
I cannot support Trump on his support of violence from this person. Body slamming someone and hitting them, when they posed no physical threat to you, is wrong. Trump is wrong to support these activities.
There is no point talking about what the left does, we already know that they will resort to violence. Especially when George Soros and foreigners(potential foreign governments) are supplying the money for their mobs.
That being said, it’s still wrong to use violence first. However, I have no problem with people protecting themselves after things degrade from the left wing nuts breaking the laws of peaceful assembly.
Since when do body slams involve punching - sounds like we still don't have any facts to determine if this reporter was first to assault the Congressman.
Trump was right once again..he said watch them take this statement out of content and sure enough as hell pisses on it own flames he was right! Like Rush says they’re so predictable! MediaVOMITS!!
I will have to buy some pearls to clutch....
The NYT is suddenly all worked up about political violence? That’s really rich. Hypocrites.
Right, did he press charges?
This is more of the DNC-Media choking on the gnat and swallowing the camel.
The left watches one of their psychotic sons shoot Congressman Scalise as he tried to kill 10, while saying “I’m doing this for healthcare!” and they have no comment.
But this pushing and shoving incident with a reporter, now this is real violence.
Where’s Obama’s felon, Bob Creamer, who hired goons to go to Trump rallies to start violence? Veritas busted their commie asses, and we should have had an investigation.
The soyboys at the Times are shocked. The average guy says, “Right on Mr. President”.
Yep, nobody likes to be harassed like this Congressman evidently was.
If you’re serious about that comment you should search out “LS” explanation of the “cheese in the maze”. Trump does nothing like this by accident.
As the excerpt says, Gianforte was "sentenced to anger management classes and community service for assaulting a reporter last spring"
Trump doesn’t talk PC, he talks like a man.
If you pinch your nose when you say that it’ll sound about right
He did — seem my post #17.
