Here come the 2020 Democrats! 30 could compete for White House

Get ready for the undercard debates. Democrats are completely out of power in Washington D.C. - for now, at least - but that hasn’t stopped a record number of them from eyeing the White House.

Up to 30 Democrats are considering a 2020 presidential campaign, a figure underlining the true level of ambition within the party amid a burning desire to defeat President Trump and one of the widest-open fields in recent memory.

Sixteen Democrats were tested in a CNN poll this month, ranging from old-timers like former Vice President Joe Biden and 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry to relative newcomers like California Sen. Kamala Harris and her New Jersey counterpart Sen. Cory Booker. Sen. Elizabeth Warren's DNA test was a sure sign she's running. Millennial heart-throb Bernie Sanders looks like he'll take the plunge.

Right now, Biden and Sanders are the only candidates polling in the double digits. Sanders, an independent socialist who caucuses with Democrats in the Senate, was Clinton’s main foil in the 2016 primaries.

These early polls could prove meaningless, as 2014 or 2015 surveys that showed Scott Walker and Rand Paul to be much more likely to win the Republican nomination than Trump. Or they could show an insurmountable advantage in name identification, much like the 1995 and 1999 leads enjoyed by Bob Dole and George W. Bush, respectively.

This sizeable crop of potential Democratic candidates comes as the party has reduced the role of its superdelegates - leaders who get a vote at the presidential nominating convention by virtue of the offices they hold rather than the primary or caucus results - in 2020.

If the Democratic presidential field really stretches all the way from Biden to little-known congressmen like Delaney, an asterisk candidate, things could get interesting.

I loved watching Trump steam roll 17 or so establishment Republicans without breaking a sweat... watching him roll over 30 Dems is just icing on the cake.

Remember the MSM referring to the GOP field as the “clown car?”

Think they’ll use the same term when referring to the Democrats? Of course we know the answer.

Technically, they will compete for the Democrat nomination. I can’t see in any way how they will be able to compete for the White House, as long as Trump is running.

Ms. Clinton needs to change her name to Hillary Stassen.

Round up the usual gang of suspects.

They'll have some new entrants this year, like Bloomberg and some Hollywood kooks. It will be a show of shows.

By the time January 2020 comes around this will be the scene at the gate of a Democrat debate: Bus pulls up and guard steps inside bus and says,” Folks I’ll need to see you tickets before I can let you in.”

The bus driver will say in a low voice, “They are the Democrats who will be on the stage debating.”

Guard, “The whole bus load?”

Bus driver, “Yup all 48 of them; they thought it would be cheaper this way.”

Guard, “Wow maybe the audience should be on the stage and this bunch should be in the first two rows.”

Bus driver, “Yeah being a “former presidential candidate gets you a good seat at restaurant, but nobody’s beatin’ Trump.”

Guard, “Yeah I know, okay park over there near the dumpster.”

Biden and Sanders are getting up there in years. 2020 could be their last chance.

On the other hand, Kamala Harris, Spartacus, and others, are still young in presidential years. They may well sit out 2020, expecting Trump to get reelected, and wait for an open election in 2024 with no incumbent.

Sounds like one of those WWF royal rumbles. And Trump can officiate. I’d pay to view.

I’m guessing about 12 to 15 of them will actually compete in the primaries. They’ll start out being cordial to one another, with the common message being “we hate Donald Trump and need to throw him out of office.” After the first couple of primaries, as the polls begin to separate the candidates, they’ll turn on one another. Each candidate’s followers will be convinced their person is the only one capable of defeating President Trump. The old guard, determined to cling to power, will face off against the young radicals, who feel their time has come. The Bernie Sanders faction, still convinced they were cheated in 2016, will be a force to be reckoned with. When they reach the convention, things could very well turn violent.

this is going to be awesome. a massive field like that, especially after the DNC has killed a number of the party establishment controls over the nominating process, could fairly easily lead to (a) a massively bloody primary process that leaves a (b) fractured, disgruntled base, and ultimately nominates a (c) fringe loony candidate that normal americans would recoil from.

this is going to be better than a south park marathon.
