Stuyvesant, Other Elite New York Public High Schools Could Admit Students Who (Failed) State Tests
Wall Street Journal ^ | October 18, 2018 | Leslie Brody

Mayor Bill de Blasio’s proposal to change admissions for eight specialized high schools could lead to students with markedly lower state test scores getting into these competitive schools, according to a review of New York City data.

His plan would offer seats to the top 7% of performers in each public middle school. If that method had been in place for this fall, data show the city would have offered spots to more than 300 students who didn’t pass state tests in seventh grade.

In addition, offers would have gone to about 1,000 fewer students who excelled on state tests, judging by city Department of Education data obtained through a public-records request.

Who should get into in these prestigious schools, including Stuyvesant High School, Bronx High School of Science and Brooklyn Technical High School, has been a matter of heated debate in recent months. Supporters of the current admission system called this new data evidence that the mayor’s proposal would enroll students who aren’t well prepared for their demanding academics. About 5,000 eighth-graders are offered spots in these schools yearly, and nearly 4,000 choose to attend for ninth grade.

“What happens if all 300 kids below proficiency decide to go?” asked Larry Cary, president of the Brooklyn Tech Alumni Foundation. Either the schools would need to provide intensive remedial help, he said, “or you’re going to have a large number of kids who can’t hack it, through no fault of their own, and you’ve set them up for failure.”

Under the current system, applicants must ace the famously difficult Specialized High School Admissions Test. Critics say it unfairly bars exceptional students who lack years of test preparation, don’t test well or simply had a bad day during their one shot at the exam.

A key communist goal is to control education.

The purpose is to transform it into indoctrination while undermining the fundamental purpose of education, to provide the building blocks necessary for productive, self-sufficient citizens.

That’s an easy fix for the leftists.. just decree that schools aren;t allowed to give failing grades... everybody gets an A. Then, make it illegal “hate” speech to point out that these kids haven’t learned the material.

To be honest, I think the whole idea of ‘elite’ grade schools and high schools is overblown, and ties into the destructive pseudo-intellectual elitism that is playing a huge role in the destruction of America from within.

Sure, good teachers matter, but learning occurs when a child is motivated to learn and is in an environment that encourages it and rewards it. Parents need to be involved, be aware at all times how their children are doing, and be committed to getting them help when they need it. We need loving, caring, involved parents - not ‘elite’ magnet schools etc. Usually these schools turn out good graduates because those who send their kids to these schools often fit the description above.

DeBlasio doesn't want to confront the real issues, as they are societal and apart from his liberal ideology.

“To get equal results you must discard standards.”

Bingo.

That will be next on the de Blasio agenda. As the unprepared students don’t pass muster in 9th to 12th grade at these schools, the de Blasio political trbpe will claim the tests during the classes are “racially biased”. [That will be intended to blame “whites”, even though, proportionally, Asians will likely get the highest test scores.]

The big diff with schools like this -

Curriculum and pace are fast. They teach more faster.
They waste kids time less. Its like 2+ years of college in effect.

Peers, that is, other students. Top brains meet top brains, compete and collaborate.

Vouchers, vouchers, vouchers in grades 1-8 BEFORE high school, and then more “minority” students would be better perpared for the rigorous standards to get into the “elite” high schools.

Critics say it unfairly bars exceptional students who lack years of test preparation, don’t test well or simply had a bad day during their one shot at the exam.

That may be true, but it’s not an unusual circumstance. The same applies to job interviews and many other things in life.

It also weeds out students who are illiterate and not at all prepared for any advanced studies. It also “bars exceptional students” who are qualified and prepared and did study for years and perform well on test day — because they gave away your seat to someone who doesn’t deserve it.

I went to Stuyvesant and took the test with absolutely no preparation as I had the mumps prior to the test. So the idea of needing all the preparation is nonsense. Those who can’t pass should not be allowed in and can go to a school better suited to their pace and be successful there. It wasn’t actually a great experience for me as I’m not particularly good at math and science and got in on my English scores but still, there have to be standards and the test had no race based data on it so it was all merit.
