ITV has set itself a challenge with its latest drama Butterfly.
It tells the story of a transgender child and a family struggling to know how best to deal with the transition.
It stars Anna Friel as Vicky, mother to 11-year-old Max (Callum Booth-Ford), who wants to become Maxine.
Emmett J Scanlan, of Hollyoaks fame, plays father Stephen. Alison Steadman takes the role of Vicky's mum and Millie Gibson is Max's sister Lily.
The family has been torn apart. Despite the couple's love, Stephen has left, unable to cope with Vicky allowing Max to be a girl at home.
Meanwhile outside, Max suffers the bullying and isolation of day-to-day life at school.
There are, of course, myriad pitfalls in turning such an emotive issue into primetime entertainment.

Does the boy actor really want to be sexually groomed by older gay males?
11 year old??? Child abuse pure and simple. At that age the child should still be eating glue. Watching a friend of mine granddaughter say she is male. It is horrible, she is such a beautiful girl.

One glimmer of sanity in a situation of otherwise total lunacy. This trans craziness is kept going by hysterical women who need serious long-term institutionalization.
They ENCOURAGE mental illness....and punish anyone who points that out.
Yup. The more deviant the behavior, the more the left loves it. Normalcy is their enemy.
I'm not so sure about that. Even if there is no other sign of abuse, what father leaves his son with an insane, agenda-driven mother?
I’ll stick with reruns of Butterflies from the ancient times of decent telly.
Sounds like more of a “channel changer” than a “game changer”.
