If true, a gift to the Democrats. President Trump imposes sanctions and hurts the US economy (any maybe SA retaliates), or President Trump doesn’t impose sanctions and the Rats accuse him of condoning this murder. Also, the US Senate seems disposed to demand sanctions or else.

It’s in their best interest to do so. If the German media is correct (which I’ll believe long before I’ll believe WaPo or Turkey, thus far our only sources of the story), then he’s been a Saudi spy for a while and he didn’t want to reform (think Muslim monarch version of a deep state operative). So the new prince/king had him killed. If this is true, then house of Saud probably thinks it’s in their best interest to put the fear into any other deep staters who don’t want to reform.
Oddly I think the Saudis may be half way to telling the truth here. This whole thing looks less like a hit than a planned snatch and run (kidnapping) gone bad. If they wanted him dead it could have been done anywhere under circumstances that would have given the Kingdom plausible deniability. Assassinating someone in their consulate would have been bone crushingly stupid. I think they planned to grab him, probably drug him, and smuggle him back to Saudi Arabia where they could put him on ice for a while.
Clearly something went wrong. A purely educated guess is he put up a fight and the subsequent interrogation got ugly. Maybe he had a heart attack. We will probably never know. But my gut says this did not start out as a planned hit.
Why don’t we just admit we’re going to go take their oil and then go do it !!!
