De wing them and ship them on trucks or railroad cars.

Couldn’t they have brought in C5’s to haul them out of there?

Those planes are too expensive to leave behind in decrepit hangars, or to have so many in unflyable condition.

So only 33 of 55 were flyable? So 60% were flyable and 40% were not able to be flown. Glad our DOD is on the ball and always prepared for the unexpected.   </sarc>

It’s SOP to fly planes to other bases when a hurricane is coming. It would be hard to believe that didn’t happen here.

All but 5 were flown to Texas or Ohio.

Those 5 were not flyable but probably not damaged beyond repair.

While watching videos of Tyndall on TV, there were several obsolete F 16’s with dayglow orange wingtips and tails that were under roof debris. These are drones that will be used for live fire practics by F 22’s and Eglin AFB F35’s out in the live range way out over the Gulf.
I once saw 3 target F16 drones flying out over the Panama City ship channel toward the Gulf followed a couple of F22’s following behind them about two minutes later. A sight to see.
Would be magnificent F22 gun camera action to see.

This hurrine gave little time for planning. It both increased in power and traveled unusually fast.

More than a dozen F-22s were left behind as Hurricane Michael bore down on the base Oct. 10. Now, in Michael’s wake, many of those are damaged, and some beyond repair, at a cost of more than $1 billion, Air Force officials said.

33 out of 55 flyable. That’s an abysmal ER 60% rate to begin with.

41 out of 55 meets the minimum acceptable ER 75% rate.

Looked at the images, none of those planes are F-22. One f-15 and some what looks like Orion’s.

You want to get an accurate reading of how pampered the flyboys are? Watch what happens to the wing commander and ask a Navy vet what would happen to him if those airplanes were ships. This wasn’t a tragedy, it was a failure.

So, just for grins. Is there a reason the US military stations its most rare and expensive fighter aircraft in the heart of the worst hurricane prone region of the USA, rather than in Nevada or some such?

Just wondering. Seems like you would want to keep uber-rare billion dollar aircraft in the desert west where natural disasters are rare. But hey, that’s just me.

And yes, hindsight is 20-20. But still and all, everybody knows Florida is ground zero for devastating hurricanes. Seems kind of bone-headed to station your most expensive and rare hardware there.
